Hence why we should be domesticating them before they're driven into extinction. Anyone who thinks letting a species go extinct over being a pet is a moron. The easiest way to make a species bounce back is to learn to live in symbiosis with it. Take sulcata tortoises for example: they at one point were endangered until people turned them into a housepet and started breeding them. Now there are tons of them and they aren't at risk of ever going extinct and are generally well looked after.

I think the tail might be pretty heavy so there is some counterbalance and they might not need to be as strong as you think, that said they obviously already do have a lot of upper body strength these animals feed by ripping apart like termite mounds and digging up ants nests if my memory serves me.
