7:40 AHHHHGH! I was driving a tractor/trailer for Schneider National one night through Buffalo and somehow ended up on the Peace Bridge over into Canada. When I got on the other side and spoke with the customs agent, the first words out of my mouth were, "Sorry, I have no business whatsoever driving into Canada. All of a sudden I was on the exit to the Peace Bridge and couldn't safely abort." The agent chuckled and said something along the lines of, "It's alright. It happens all the time." After a brief delay, they had an escort vehicle take me around a gated access road and get pointed back into the States. Total class act on the part of Canadian Customs. 👍

Nope, they did have border guards back then. There are some differences between US/Canada border crossing rules in the 1970s and today. In the 1970s, before the US/Canada Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA, USMCA and WTO, customs duties on imported goods were even more important than today. Also in the 1970s, both countries had relatively relaxed ID requirements for travellers. A passport wasn't compulsory. Frequently, an oral declaration of your citizenship and place of residence was accepted by the border guards. Lastly, in the 1970s there wasn't quite as much anxiety about international terrorism, human trafficking, drug smuggling and money laundering through the US/Canada border.

By declaring them, you avoid the fines for "smuggling" them into Canada. At least they allowed them to return to the USA with the guns to ship them home.

You have to file for a permit to transport handguns through Canada, and receive approval BEFORE you get there. You can't just show up at the border and declare that you have handguns. If the guy had done his research, and filed his paperwork beforehand, they'd have been allowed through with the guns. As to "why" the Canadian law is like that, I'm sure I don't know.

Fully agree: but do understand that cultures are different. Police in these countries are extremely corrupt and are known to do nothing about reports or may actually get paid to look the other way. These guys came from a country like that.. I grew up in a country like that and in many cases it’s an absolutely waste of time to file a report. So it’s much way to sit with the person who scammed you and make a deal than to go through a waste of time process and lose on both ends.. if you have never lived in that type of environment it’s hard to understand. But overall I do agree that they should have filed it.
