The way you combine martial arts prowess and knowledge gleaned from history and archaeology to bring pankration to life never fails to put a smile on my face! Your technique with the front kick is beautiful to behold. I need to learn to really commit and push my hips into my front kicks like that; mine always go too low and their aim tends to err.

Thank you for your kind words Zoe. Tip: at first try to rise your knee at the height you want to strike your opponent and then push your hips out without kicking. ( like a knee strike) when you ll get used of the movement, add the front kick. Thank you for your comment

Thank you for the very interesting videos.. when you see the long guard, high stances, low kicks elbows and knees it is very close too Muay Thai or Muay Chaiya which both come from the battlefield art of Krabi -krabong. Is it just necessity is the mother of invention? And it naturally developed from the battlefield? Or the Ancient Greeks past this on to Far East via trade? Or pure coincidence? All the same very interesting...

Hello Thomas. A lot of pankration historians believe pankration had been spead by Alexander the great. I don't think this is absolutely correct. My opinion is that every nation developed it's own way of fighting due to necessity for survival and through exhanges with other nation they added things. So I believe the reason we see these similarities between muay Thai and pankration is a combination of all the above you mentioned, plus the human Kinesiology which has never changed through the ages. Also all the blocks of traditional systems(karate etc) and defences of modern boxing can be found in ancient pankration(I will make a video) . Thank you for your comment 🙂

At 0:34 in the video, that statue on the far right, I believe it's meant to represent a leg sweep. It looks like he's kicking out his opponents leg while pulling him towards himself to throw him over. If you ever watch Bokh or Shuai Jiao, you'll see similar movements.

It is also known as the Italian kick in Savate, a type of "coup de pied bas". In karate is called fumikomi geri, and it is used to destabilize the opponent for a takedown. Recently there has been a lot of research conducted into Shuai Jiao by karate practioners, looking for the roots of karate and the real applications of the katas. It has come to the realization that original karate in reality was a lot of grappling with strikes. Thus the katas of karate have a lot of similarities with Shuai Jiao techniques which were also present in chinese white crane boxing.

@@tatumergo3931 Yeah I came to the conclusion years ago that basically all traditional martial arts have their base in wrestling/clinch work. @pankrationchannel2838
@pankrationchannel2838 3 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend. It might be a snap kick, it's hard to tell. I chose to demonstrate a push kick because the description after the front kick demonstration( castor vs itimoneas) describes a push kick to the sternum. Also a famous way to kick in ancient Greece was with the heel ( pternizein). You can't heel kick someone effectively in the stomach with a snap kick, it's better to hit with the ball of the foot. These are the main reasons I chose to demonstrate a push kick. Thank you for your comment 🙂

It would be interesting to compare pankration kicks and savate kicks. Are they related?
@tatumergo3931
@tatumergo3931 Ай бұрын
The argument persist today as how much did savate might have evolved from historical European swordsmanship treatises in which kicking was used. Usually it is mostly believed that French sailors created the art of savate, after contact with southeastern Asian cultures. Yet medieval European combat treatises show kicking techniques. There's even an incomplete self-defense manual dating to the early 17th century to late 16th century, that shows kicking techniques.

Some archeology recreationists have considered that some ancient depictions demonstrate this type of technique. It's probable that Muay thai might have been developed through the influence of a kickboxing martial arts from India. Ancient India was partially invaded by the Macedonians and ancient Greeks.
@tatumergo3931
@tatumergo3931 Ай бұрын
The French kickboxing art of savate is allege to have developed by sailors who came in contact with the people of southeast Asia. Yet kicking techniques have been present in medieval swordsmanship treatises and manuals. Prior to the 18th century there were several manuals of self-defense combat that depict the use of kicking techniques. The manuals are incomplete and impossible to determine if the roundhouse kicking technique was present. Since the roundhouse kick is similar in nature to the crescent kick and something that is easy to execute, it would not be too far fetch to think that it could have existed. It's allegedly believe that modern Karate adopted the roundhouse kicking technique, after the Japanese witnessed a demonstration of savate from a French delegation.

One reason we can't find high kicks in ancient pankration is the sand of palaistra( arena).tha sand makes mobility difficult. Gastrizein is a generic term for strikes to the abdomen( gastir=abdomen) . It means " To perform an action( to strike) to the abdomen". It does not determine the way you strike the abdomen but it determines the hitting area. You can strike the abdomen with front kick, side kick, back kick, knee or you can even punch. That's the image in debate between recreation archeologists, of whether it depicts a roundhouse kick or a front kick. In either case, it's very possible or probable since both kicks are a matter of turning the hips. More than likely it is, similar in execution to a muay thai kick.
