Great video, Emma. I’ve never read a graphic novel, but never knew where to start. I do now and I’ll be giving one of these a try in the near future.

So glad you made this video when ever I mention graphic novels people often think they are about super heroes I really enjoyed Blankets by Craig Thompson, V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons and Fun Home: a Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel. I would love to own or read more graphic novels than I do but I find them very expensive and unfortunately my local library doesn't have a very good selection.
@amandakate49514 жыл бұрын
I always Free Blankets by Craig Thompson referenced, I think he's just not an author for me, the illustrations are beautiful, the story I am less attached too. Fun Home by Alison Bechdel TOTALLY agree. Have you tried ordering books into your local library? My friend always raves about ordering books in, we're in Glasgow, so think card holders can be matched with books more easily than in more remote areas.

Persepolis is one of my favorite graphic novel. Color Trilogy - Kim Dong Hwa is highly recommended graphic novel.

This was an excellent video, Emma. A lot of people think that graphic novels (or comic books in general) are not 'real books'. The books you show here prove otherwise. May I also suggest Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' "Watchmen" (I know: obvious choice) and Moore and Eddie Campbell's "From Hell". Also, Brian K. Vaughan's "Pride of Baghdad" is a beautiful, sad graphic novel based on a true story about four lions who escape a Baghdad zoo after an American bombing in 2003. By all means check these graphic novels out.

I know it's such a shame that people don't always give them the respect they deserve! Thanks for the recommendations, will definitely look these up.
@Archonsx3 жыл бұрын
because a lot of them are not books, they’re childish and flawed, to the point of only being enjoyable to children, we need authors like george rr martin or stephen king to get into the comic book genre, then the genre will be more suitable to be considered worthy of being called “books”, comic books desperately need better writing, better characters, better world building

I am mainly into comics and graphic novels but i do read books occasionally. There are many graphic novels that are non-superhero but are some of the must read stories. Locke & Key for example, the writer is Joe Hill

I have never seen the inside of a graphic novel what's the difference between a graphic novel and a comic book?, do Scotland and England uk have graphic novels or do they just call it comics here? I love physical printed books reading them, but how do I read a book with nothing but pictures in it?
@BookBreak4 жыл бұрын
I think they can be used quite interchangeably but generally speaking a graphic novel is a little longer and contains a complete self-contained narrative, whereas a comic book is one part of a longer serialised narrative!

After reading Marjane Satrapi's books, would you make a distinguish between Islamic values and teachings compared to the politics that you see in Iran? Do you agree or disagree that a woman can be a feminist from an Islamic worldview? Also, you said the characters talked about escaping an 'arranged' married. But do you mean a forced marriage?
@BookBreak4 жыл бұрын
Yes, as far as I remember 'arranged' is the term that they used in the book but probably more referring to forced. And absolutely you can be an Islamic feminist!!
@asifchowdhury80054 жыл бұрын
@@BookBreak Oh ok. Theres a lot of misconceptions and stereotypes of Islam and Muslim women, so its good to see books where Muslims regain the narratives. Yes, so we can be feminists from a Islamic worldview, so its not mutually exclusive to be a Muslim woman/man and have feminist values. :)
