CBS just wasn't having much luck with new sitcoms in 1985, although they had Kate and Allie and Newhart (if they refused to renew either, there would be an uproar). NBC and ABC were with Who's The Boss, Growing Pains, Gimme a Break, 227, Cosby Show, Family Ties, Webster, Mr. Belvedere, Golden Girls.

"Mary" starring Mary Tyler Moore was perhaps its most notable flop that season, and there was a good reason why she ended her classic '70s series when she was still on top. And with the conclusion of "Alice" and "The Jeffersons" the previous spring, CBS suddenly found itself at a disadvantage. This was also the season that the primetime soap jumped the shark, and CBS was home to three of the four heavy hitters, one of them, Dallas, having its infamous "Dream Season" at the time. Its best new primetime series turned out to be a drama, The Equalizer. CBS wouldn't really return to glory like it did during the first half of the 1980s until the 2000s.
