Phil's a hell of a lyricist and singer. Dimebag, kicking ass on that guitar. Forever stronger than all. Song's about suicide and living after losing someone to suicide. When he was a kid, Phil lost two close friends to suicide, and this is what he wrote to work through it, while being respectful to his friends' memory and writing a song that's universally accessible to people.

Phil Anselmo wrote the lyrics about a friend who committed suicide back in New Orleans that had a huge effect on his friend group so he wanted to write a song about it but thought it would be cheesy to write it the way it really happened so instead he tweaked his lyrics to tell a story about someone losing a romantic partner to death which he said he thought more ppl could relate to.

you asked what "unlock my door and pass the cemetery gates" means so let me explain here in the south where Phil anselmo is from too it's a superstitious thing to lock your doors and roll up your windows when driving past a cemetery so him saying I will unlock my door is a metaphor for saying I will face this head on and allow myself to feel what I feel and not lock his emotions up in a box type thing.

@brandonmcsorley95792 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Where to start. The next song I would check out following this would be "This Love", has a similar feel and also more clean vocals. I first saw Pantera LIVE! in 2000 at Ozzfest. The show was outside, and it was extremely rainy that day. Mud fights quickly became the coolest things to do. There was a giant clearing in the middle of the crowd where people were just chucking mud at each other. As soon as Pantera started playing, the mud fight circle instantly turned into the most raging mosh pit I have ever seen in my life. Every time Dimebag would solo, the spotlight would shine on him and the crowd would go WIIILD! The harmonics are called harmonic squeals or harmonic screams, and they extremely difficult to do. Dimebag used them all the time flawlessly because he was a rock god. RIP Dimebag and Vinnie.

Artificial harmonics are also referred to as pinch harmonics by some people.
@MetalZoned2 жыл бұрын
As one of the people who recommended it (but not the one you referenced) thank you so much for listening to the commenters! The song is about losing a loved one and dealing with the fallout and regret of that. For the guitar sound on that insane squeal at the end, he used a wah pedal in conjunction with a Floyd rose bridge. Ola Englund has a short (1 min) video explaining it kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5Cxq4BmeNCqZsU

This is a masterpiece. It has beauty; it has grit; it has sadness; it has aggression; it has loss and it has triumph. No popular genre does transitions better than metal and the transitions in this song are great. I think the best thing that this song does is balance. Like, everything is great but nothing is too great (if that makes sense). The rhythm section is chunky and groovy. Dime (the KING of riff), delivers in both his roles as rhythm and lead guitar. His solo has a blazing part and bluesy part. As for Phil, this song can act as his entire resume. He can sing, growl, he has a duet voice, an operatic voice, and a scream. The lyrics are sad, vulnerable, and strong, AND he made it just vague enough that anyone can make it a song about a time in their life, which makes it their own song. It is a rare 7-minute song that flies by and even makes you wish there was more. Simply put, it's a fucking masterpiece.

Sebs, to hit that note, Dimebag used a whammy pedal, which allows you to play an octave or more above the actual notes you're playing, using an expression pedal to control the amount of pitch bend. I want to say It's about a $350 pedal, which is a lot for a pedal, but, once you have one, you'll wonder how you ever did without one.
@GimmeJimmy23 Жыл бұрын
