Same. I had just clocked in at work when my foreman who was also a metalhead asked if I heard Dime had been killed. My first thought was he was an asshole for trying to prank me like that. It only took another second or two to realize he wasn't joking. The shop owner always kept a TV turned to the news in the front office so I went in there and saw it on the TV. I was crushed and the rest of the day is just a fog. To this day Pantera is still the band I've seen the most times in concert. RIP Dime and Vinnie.

You should listen to the album version some time. For some reason they cut the real intro of the song out for the music video. The real intro is beautifully haunting with both great lyrics from Anselmo and incredible guitar work from Dime...it completes the song...makes it one of my top 5 songs of all time.
@bigtbone44692 ай бұрын
Hi Ray, love your reactions. The song is basically about the character losing a girlfriend and potentially rejoining her in the afterlife. Either when they die or sooner by committing suicide. Phil has said in interviews that he had found inspirations for the lyrics from good friends who had committed suicide. On a brighter note, yes, Dimes guitar work is amazing!🤘🤘🤘🤘

I believe this song is about the singer losing a loved one and not allowing himself to grieve. Over time he lets himself grieve, deal with the loss and move on. If you have not done 5 Minutes Alone and Floods then this is a must. 2 of the best metal solos ever. Floods is like no other song I have ever heard and very different to any other Pantera song. You should consider checking out the song In This River by Black Label Society. As others have mentioned, Daryl "Dimebag" Abbott was unfortunately killed years ago by a so called fan at a show. At the time he was best friends, practically another brother, with another up and coming guitarist named Zakk Wylde who at the time had his band, Black Label Society. At the time Zakk was in a low point and working on this song as a song about the challenges in life, in general. His best friend, Dimebag (now gone), caused him to take this song to and even deeper meaning. It is now considered a tribute to Zakk. If you do, I'm not sure which version you should check out. The official music video IS a tribute to the two of them growing up and, of course, has better audio but there is a live version where he plays it at the Hollywood Guitar World Rock Walk (this is like the Hollywood Walk of Fame but for music artist.) where you can see his emotions really coming out. Overall Zakk is probably not your first ideal impression of a rock star. He's usually really quiet and keeps to himself, very humble and generous but is about 6"6", looks like a gym rat and a straight up Harley-Davidson biker vibes, shreds at guitar but can also play the piano like a damn angel. Zakk has now actually taken over Dimebags place in Pantera and have been touring recently.

Hey, kids. Gen-X metalhead here. Y'see, back in the day, metal and punk were considered 'less-than' by the boomers running the music industry. They didn't hate the money metal and punk brought in, however 'little' it was ('cause similar to gaming and movies these days, you can bring in twice the amount of the production budget in profit, and still 'perform below expectations'), and any chance the CEOs got to fuck a band over, they took it. Henry Rollins and Black Flag literally had to break into the warehouse that their label hid the thousands of already pressed and packed albums in so they could steal said albums and get them out to the fans, 'cause the label decided sitting on them and writing them off on their taxes was _more profitable_ than financing advertisements and distribution. On the basic human need to make and acquire art, not a single fleeting thought was ever wasted by any music CEO with any power. Remember this when they want you to support capitalism, kids: Under capitalism, nobody matters but the shareholders. This and-I-can't-sarc-this-asm-enoughly so-called 'official' video is a masterpiece of a shit chop job. The entire amazing extended intro and the entire first verse of the song cut for... time? AORness? Label CEO caprice? Fuck knows. This video starts a third into the song, and I hate that. Cinematography's okay, and at least they trimmed nothing off the end, but, man... 'radio edits' were a fucking cancer. When you get a chance, listen to the album version. Whispering a curse on the shareholders under your breath the whole time it's playing won't make the experience better, but you might sleep imperceptibly more soundly later.

This song is loosely about a suicide pact between two friends, and one friend doesn't follow through with the pact. The tempo and tone shifts go back and forth between contemplation and anger. An old superstition, especially in parts of the Southern US is rolling your car windows up and locking the doors as you pass by a graveyard to prevent picking up unwanted hitchhikers
@neilpatrickhairless2 ай бұрын
Hence the lines about being "crucified for no sins" - in other words, placing blame upon ones self for not following through with a deadly promise. I think the character in this song perhaps had a religious or otherwise spiritual hangup about suicide and signed up for more than they really wanted to commit to. "The chance to save my soul, and my concern is now in vain" -- the person feels dead even though they didn't commit suicide because their best friend is gone and they're left alone to deal with that loss. "Unlocking your door "while passing the gates of the graveyard is inviting ghosts into your life, inviting the dead into your world. Trying to reach out to whatever is gone because you don't know what else to do or who else to turn to for closure
@neilpatrickhairless2 ай бұрын
The call and response at the end between Phil and the guitar is someone crying out to the dead and a banshee calling back, signifying the death of a family member or someone very intimately close to you. It fades out with a ghostly voice crooning in the background and everything musically dulls out. Burying the past
