I think they have a Panther type F Hull at the Patton tank museum in the US, but it has a type G turret on it. I believe the panther at Overloon is a G. The F turret at Bovington is damaged. It was on the gunnery range as a target until somebody realised how important it was to save it!

The really long barrel will be the 75mm L/100. it was proposed but I remember reading there was no serious effort to produce it because it was felt it would be too problematic. There was also a Czech 5 round carousel auto loader tested, I think that was to be paired to a improved 75mm L/70 main gun designated 7.5cm KwK44/2

Good video!! The Patton Museum of Armor & Cavalry at Fort Knox, KY, used to have a Panther F chassis with Panther G turret on static display. Remember going to see it all the time while stationed at Fort Knox during the 1980s when in US Army. Think it was moved to Fort Benning, GA, when the Armor School was relocated there a bunch of years ago.
@STHV_3 жыл бұрын
That was actually the only Panther II prototype ever built, whilst it may look similar to a normal Panther, just about everything is different. Panther II is from early 1943. Panther Ausf F is from late 1944 and are completely separate projects And yes it is currently at Fort Benning

This wasn't a paper Panzer, several were built (but not totally assembled) and it was rumoured that at least 2 saw action in the last ditch defense of Berlin. There's a photo of the Panther production line somewhere with both F and G hulls being built concurrently. Also, there's a (very) beat up F turret at the Overloon Museum in The Netherlands.

@TheTormodbj3 жыл бұрын
if you read the book panzers in berlin, there is documented that at least tree panther F hulls saw action in Berlin in last part of the war, they where fitted with the regular panther G turret (the smallturm never saw action) and none of the had the steel wheels, all with the normal rubber wheels. There is small differenses on the G and F hull, the main difference is that it had a thicker front upper plate on the roof hull, different way to fit the front upper plate to the hull (see different interlockling steelplates/joint on the sides) and it had a stg44 in the ballmount in the front and not the mg34/42
@flare97572 жыл бұрын
Panther Fs actually entered production, but did not see combat in the full F configuration. There are pictures of them out there but only the hulls. If I remember correctly some F hulls saw combat with a G turret. Regardless, the Fs would be a miserable tank to be turret crew on. The standard turrets were cramped enough. The Fs would be almost impossible to crew and escape from when the tank got hit.
@der_fuxs3 жыл бұрын
The main differences from G to F are: -frontal hull roof (between glacis plate und turret ring) from 12mm to 25mm improved -new hatches for driver and radio operater. They now had a swivel mount to open sideways -ball mount redesigned to house a Sturmgewehr 44 instead of the MG34 which was no longer in production -mounts for the radio‘s where redesigned to make a field modification to a Befehlswagen (command vehicle) possible -every vehicle should have the mounts for IR nightvision for plug&play Installation -steel wheels as standart - somewhere I read about improved belly armour in the frontal area for improved mine protection, but I can‘t remember the source right now, so that‘s hypothetical! The Schmalturm (literally 'narrow turret') seems plausible to be placed on this slightly improved hull, US troops found a fair amount of readily welded turret shells. This completely redesigned turret had several advantages over the initial Panther turrets. The design was way easier to manufacture, the frontal part was narrower giving it a smaller target, the frontal armor thickness was increased from 80 to 120mm and it was still around 8 tons for the completed turret including interior, so no weight gained over the previous one. Also the range finder would have improved the tanks capabilities a lot. But I‘m not shure if this was possible to install in this turret. There was another proposal with a triangular shape on the roof like on a house to make room for the range finder without blocking the gun when depressing it. Overall pretty nice, but to little to late in my opinion. There are two picture of the same knocked out Panther in Berlin. Many say it is a F hull with a late G turret. I‘m no expert in distinguishing them, but if it was actually a F hull than it might be the only one to have seen combat.
@STHV_3 жыл бұрын
It is an F hull, you can see the different plate joint between the front glacis and the sponson sides and I think in the image at the armour dump you can just make out the slides for the new hatches

The G hull had been refined to the point where it was about as simplified as it was going to get, so changes were mainly cosmetic, ie OVM rearranged or something like that. I'm suspecting the F was an interim design between the G and the E-50, which would had more advanced armor. However spaced armor was being experimented which in WW2 and the Panther F could have been developing in that direction.

@bobdickens36743 жыл бұрын
No Panther F hull exists. They only mounted the turret on G hulls. The one in the Patton museum is a panther II prototype with a G turret
@jonfoisy12373 жыл бұрын
I believe the most major change to the hull of the ausf. F was the armor thickness of the side plates below the sponsons. On older panthers, the area between the roadwheels and sponsons were vulnerable to incoming fire. Hence they introduced shurtzen to cover this area. On the ausf. F I believe they were trying to dispense with the need for the shurtzen. Which kind of puzzles me why the include the shurtzen to the updade kit. Who is to say? As far as I've read the F was never assembled into a completed vehicle prior to the war ending.
@STHV_3 жыл бұрын
The F hull did not see any armour improvements only minor changes like a different armour plate joint and new hatches for the driver and radio operator. Just like the upgrade from Ausf D to Ausf A the only major change was the turret

I was just watching a video on this tank yesterday - the hull had a bigger removable panel around the hull crew hatches to make it easier to remove the transmission. There were certainly some hulls produced alongside the G, and some turrets (one is still at The Tank Museum), so it is possible a handful of this model actually were used.

Wow, I love the directions--- way to make it easier so I'll check out their line. Under 50 bucks is also a selling point. I found one of my old kit boxes--- I paid 15 bucks for the Revell USS Forrestal and 12 bucks for the Tamiya Marder-- that definitely makes me old! I don't get the thinking the Germans had with this-- the Panther already had issues with the L/70 and no counterweight, so the plan was to put an even bigger weapon on, still with no counterweight? I'd love to see a kitbash Panther, with a loader's hatch on the roof and some kind of counterweight on the rear of the turret-- just for fun.

Just for info, the main hull difference was the hatches - they slid open rather than flipping open. And a number of these sliding hatch hulls (with G turrets) were in use during the last few months of the war. The ones that went in to use had rubber rimmed tyres, not the rimless ones - and these are available in the box.
@Mishn03 жыл бұрын
There were at least a couple of the F turrets mounted on G hulls too. That's what the allies picked up for evaluation at the end of the war. There was talk of at least one F turret on a G hull that was in combat in Berlin but it's not confirmed.
@STHV_3 жыл бұрын
@@Mishn0 the G hulls with F turrets did not see any combat, they were just testbeds for the new Schmalturm however at least one F hull saw combat with a G turret as there is photographic evidence

It bugs me a bit that just about every depiction of Ausf G and Ausf F use the Steel tyred roadwheels, only a small batch of G's ever had them and the only evidence there is for them on the F is factory worker testimony, no documentation at all. Plus the only F hull that saw service had standard rubber tyred roadwheels

@Tomah4wkVideos3 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true. The MG-42 wouldn't fit in the Hull since the barrel comes out the side when it needs exchanging; and there is no space for that once the barrel sticks through the Hull. No ball mounted German machine gun port had a 42.

Only one mild steel Panther II prototype hull was produced, it was captured by the US and shipped back to Aberdeen and tested, it then hade several Ausf G components fitted to it, including an Ausf G turret, it is now housed at Fort Benning. The Panther II is a completely separate project from early 1943 and was never intended to use the Schmalturm of the Panther F as the Panther II was cancelled in late 1943. Panther Ausf F began development in late 1944 and several hulls were indeed under construction. However there is only one confirmed Ausf F that saw combat which was fitted with an Ausf G turret
