It's time! We are gearing up for another pantry challenge! This challenge allows us to eat as much as we can from our pantry, freezers, and canning pantry before buying things from the grocery store. In this video, I am getting an idea of what food and pantry items we already have to get started in 2025. Watch now to get inspired to start your own pantry challenge in January, or even to just get your food organized and see what you have! It's easy to forget and replace things that you might already have because you haven't developed a good system yet of organizing them! Today's your day! I am similar to you, in that I told my husband that other than milk or eggs or fresh fruit, we are going to follow the challenge as though as of yesterday we were stormed in and couldn’t get to the store. We get a veggie box every other week and a meat box once a month from an organic farm and it has already been paid for last September. I have finished my home canned inventory, now I am working on my pantry inventory and lastly I will be working on my freezers inventory. Good luck!!

Just watched the whole video. I’m excited to follow along. It’s just my husband and I right now. We are also doing the pantry challenge. This will be my second year feeding both of us and I definitely learned some things from the 1st year.

Hello, We also live in CO. I will be doing the pantry challenge this year also. We did it last year, but towards the end of January we stopped. This year will be much more successful because we mostly eat from the pantry now. Before we ran to the store any time we wanted something else. I have over 1000 jars canned of a bunch of items we eat. It is my love language to can and feed my family. My grown children come over and shop the pantry for any items they are running low on. So we are much more prepared this year. I also don't have a cow or any way to get fresh milk so we will be allowing ourselves dairy items and produce for only small purchases. Good luck with the challenge.

Awesome to have a fellow CO friend here! 1000 jars!?! That sounds amazing and I know how much work went into preserving that much food! It's rewarding to be able to eat food that you canned yourself with minimal ingredients/preservatives. And even more rewarding to be able to share with others! New sub, I'll be following along. It's just me and I only eat meat, cheese, eggs, butter and fruit. BUT I do cook for my daughter and 4 grandchildren, and they eat way different than I 😂.

The FDA banned the use of steroids and hormones in poultry production in the 50s. What we see in the grocery stores are the Frankenbird hybrids that were created to produced insane amounts of meat on their individual frames. Cornish cross is one of the more ubiquitous meat breeds. I can't remember which homesteading channel mentioned them, but I think it was More Than Farmers. If I'm recalling correctly, Codi mentioned that they grew so fast and so large that it freaked them out a little and they never raised them again.

Syrup does not expire, but you have to refrigerate it aft opening or it will get moldy.

@@TrellisandTrails It's not silly at all. Dating labels are intentionally confusing. You might find a best by, which is more of a best quality before whichever date. That's what gets put on the maple syrup we get.

I have never refrigerated syrup after opening it. It has never gone bad. I am 72 years old, for reference purposes.

How will you be using the ground bison? Chilli, perhaps?

We have used it in so many different things! Basically, anything you would use ground beef for. Chili, tacos, burgers, meatloaf.. the options are endless!

You shouldn't store your potatoes next to onions I think they should be several feet away from each other. I don't remember why.

You're totally right, I just haven't followed this rule yet lol. The onions can cause the potatoes to spoil quicker! I should move them.. eventually 🤪

I'm wondering if it's okay for me to store canned goods down there

Mine is not either but always stays between 55-66°F. Canned goods are best stored in a cool, dark, dry place, so I feel like the temperature is actually perfect for them! I keep a thermometer on my shelf usually just to keep an eye on the temperature, but even when we've gotten snow and below freezing temps it stays consistently around 55°.
