Thanks for the video. My grandfather (1926) fought in the 23rd panzer division in hungary. Survived the war. There is even a whole combat history book about the 23rd panzer division by Rubentisch with many interesting insights. He lost part of his ear due to severe burn damage after his tank was hit. I inherited the original version, given to all members back in 1963.

Let me know your thoughts, Do you think this operation was completely pointless, or could it have been handled differently? How would you have approached it, and would the 6th Panzer Division been better defending Berlin? Instead as Gudarian wanted originally.

An Excellent Video Cheers. People forget that Germany still had some considerable Striking Power left in February/ March 45 and the fact that they were able to move the 6th SS Panzer from Belgium to Hungary and then Go more or less straight into Battle speaks for itself!.(The Bulk of the Fuel needed though was used up Slogging it out with 'General Mud') more than Malinovsky's Tankers and when they did they invariably achieved a Kill Ratio of around 4 or 5 to 1! There are some Excellent Books available about the 1st SS Panzer Division/ Leibstandarte and it's Fighting Retreat all the way back from Hungary to Linz in Austria The Fact that Hitler sent the remaining 'Cream' of His Army to Hungary and Czechslovakia and Schorners Rigid Orders to Hold out at all costs in the end as everywhere else crumbled was because of the Oil and Weapons Research Facilities that were Sighted in those areas ie the Skoda Werke and the underground Factories etc

The Hungarian military leadership signaled to the Germans that it was not good for an attack there, it was mud and swamp, and the area was also in its name. German leadership did not deal with this, the price became expensive. Irreplaceable German heavy tanks sank, which were then blown up one after the other. They blew up most of the tanks, not the Russians, but themselves. You just had to look at the name of the area, mud meadow and snow melt. Too bad about that. The Hungarian leadership suggested a little further north, not much, but the ground would have been firmer there.

At this stage, capitulation was the most rational option, since Hitler didn't get England out of the war in early stages, the war was lost... A little known fact is that Soviet divisions in WW2 were actually smaller in size in organization compared to German or Western Allies division, a full strength Soviet rifle division was barely comparable to half-strength German infantry division - an organizational design stemmed from the broad front of Russia which required forces to spread much more to cover all the ground.

Although the Nazi's were evil, the men who fought for them were caught between a rock and a hard place. I look at their faces and see humans and sometimes myself. What would I have done? I shudder to think about it. Every country's government thinks they are right in what they do, but I look at my own country's history and see the wrongs we have done in the name of patriotism, loyalty and national pride. In the end of it all, it is up to the individual human to decide how they will act and respond to each situation and in the end, live with it.

Good video, watched many of your videos. I do think you key in on something that is over stated. This idea that German high command and "internal frictions" played some mass role in the defeat of Germany is way off. Clearly it did not help matters but its over played. There was no way in hell Germany had a chance, from the start. The fact it did what it did is pretty amazing. (from an observers point of view) the narrative is sold that Germany was trying to take over the world and the world was saved by the allies. The old good versus evil. However the truth is far more complicated. The history/story that has been pushed for so long and accepted to the point few people ever question it. So much is taken as fact, yet when one starts to really question the story its pretty easy to find huge holes in it. The Red Army was coming for Germany, this was reason enough to fight to the last man. Those in higher positions knew good and well what awaited Germany. Rarely is this point of view ever discussed as the narrative is too ingrained. Few videos are made about the cost of the war to the Germans and fewer ever think about what these last ditch battles were meant to hold off, for as long as possible. From that point of view it make far more sense.

1/ Hitler was Austrian, Viennese. He was always proud of that. Vienna was more important to him than Berlin. That's why he ALSO took everything to Hungary from 1944. 2/ Hungary was the last country that sided with the Germans, it was politically important that they were not alone. 3/ Militarily as well, since August 1944 there was a fierce battle with the Russians in the territory of the country, for 9 months. 4/ Important raw materials, including crude oil, were in the country, which was understandably important to the German leadership. Anyway, slightly smaller than the Battle of Kursk in 1943, but also one of the biggest armored clashes of the World War in Hungary, was the "Alföld", or armored battle of Debrecen, in October 1944. America counts the Battle of the Bulge as their biggest Battle. The Eastern Front had about twenty Battles the same size and three of four battles twice as large. By 44 Russia could have finished Germany off by themselves. We just kept the Russians from overrunning the rest of Europe!

At that point in the War, anything the Germans tried was merely farting into the Hurricane.

With all its technological superiority, if Germany had played their chess pieces sensibly instead of waging war with the entire world, things would have turned out much differently.

Absolute BS. The SS divisions were less than half their allocated strengths. Absolutely terrible research.

It was not a brutal fight at all. Since 1944 the Russians were literally toying whit the rapidly disentregating Wehrmacht. Btw.They newer had any intention to ocupy east Germany. Thats why Stalin proposed that germany can unite as long as Nato doesn't go further east.He actually wrote it 1950. We all know that Germany was beefed up by cheep credit from the Usa

Got no time for Stalin and the Bolsheviks - just as evil and racist as the Nazis. Russians would have been fought to a stalemate by the Germans without supplies from USA and British empire. Uncle Joe WAS interested in colonizing Germany and Central Europe, including Denmark, in an unashamed focus on defending Russia from future attacks from the West. The West likewise wants to defend the very real threat of totalitarian invasion from the East. The nonscence of it all is that the threat for all northern Eurasia, including the people of Russia, is from the totalitarians in China! And of course it's not the people's of the world that are the problem, most of whome want to live in peace, it's our governing elites. We the people have somehow got to find a way to command governments that govern properly, including setting science, human rights and the rule of law at the center of national life. And certainly the current nonscence of placing feelings above science in the woke West has to be challenged otherwise I'm off to Moscow to take up the offer of Asylum. Finally, we should never forget the bravery and sacrifice of our ancestors as well as their war crimes.

My grand father was in the waffen SS 1940-45. He said he was so sorry for cooking GEWS in the ovens. He said poor GEWSS where baked like bagels. He said he was just having a good time trying to chill out. He said too bad they did not have micro wave ovens back then. It would of been faster. .. Grand pa cracks me up when he laughs about all the baking they did. I laugh too. You go Grand ..pa...keep baking them....ha....ha....ha...!!
