I todays video we take a first look back at an old classic by SSI, Panzer General. The grandfather of the Panzer Corps, Strategic Mind, and a half dozen other games, Panzer General is an all time classic wargame that created a sub genre of wargames that have survived for 30 years.
Panzer General was a classic for me on PlayStation 1, so in todays video I take a look at the PS1 version of the game in what may become a weekly series looking at classic retro wargame titles.

Not sure if you know but strategic bombers are unique here. While they don't do a lot of damage they deplete supply from units and supress for the whole turn. If you supress bunker enough they may surrender during an attack, same for strong ground units if they have nowhere to retreat they will surrender.. Also if you park unit next to city they can't build there, Flak guns only fight if attacked park them in front of enemy units and they will attack your 88... Paras are useless...Flak can be suppressed with StratBombers they will not be as effective plus much of ammo will be gone... fun game! Also this game has been remade long time ago by an enthusiast I forget his name but if you are interested search for PANZER GENERAL FOREVER includes Allied General and some user made campaigns based on the PG engine...Great times back in the day! '94!!!!

The panzer general / allied general games were always some of the best campaign games. I still own mine

I still have my PC boxed versions from 1994 and 1995! The first ones were the best...clean, ideal map setups, lack of needless complications.

You don't have to be zoomed in so close on the battlefield. On the PS1 hold the triangle button down and press R1 and the camera will move out. Press L1 and it will move in.

Need recon units. They are so under appreciated. Especially with the FOG of war setting you so need them

Early game I liked to add 3 or 4 recon to my core units.

The reason the Netherlands isn't included in this map is because an entirely different Amy Group invaded Holland. in order to draw Alliued forces into the trap.

Please play more retro titles! I'd love to see you tackle a koei classic like Three Kingdoms or PTO. Also remember Panzer General is part of the General Series (Star General, Fantasy General, Pacific General) etc

Thanks for continuing the series! Why don't you overstrength yout elite units? I found Srukas are the best solution to heavily armored allied tanks; and this is especially true against T34s and the KVs of Russia.

you can check the airfield for available air transports by inspecting that hex then you can load paratroopers into them when on the airfield there is separate entry for ground combat 88s in AT section go for France, and maybe you will get to invade UK

I remember now that the way to get the longest campaign is to get a minor victory on one of these next two scenarios, probably the second. The French and British had better tanks at this stage of the war, especially the armour. You really need those tactical bombers.

I would often go for a minor victory in order to give more time in interim maps for units to get exp and to build up core force for later. A shame that eventually winning in Normandy and southern France doesn't give a 1944-45 UK invasion option, but is effectively still treated as a loss and then you fight defence of Germany anyway. The only sore point I have for the campaign which otherwise was so far ahead of it's time, better even than Panzer Corps

The AI can't build units in a city if you have a unit adjacent to that city. It can be imperative to kill off a unit so you can get one of your own in adjacent to force the AI to stop building reinforcements. The same applies to you, you can't build in a city when the AI has a unit adjacent.

If you get a chance near the end of a mission remember to oversupply to get bigger units to go forward. You also get a little supply when you elite replace so strengthen and supply if i remember the the game correctly

It's taken 3 episodes but it suddenly dawned on me that the music in the game is the same as the Red Dwarf tv series. " Smoke me a kipper. I'll be back for breakfast." 😊❤😊

It's a PS1 game so not on modern consoles unfortunately. You can play the iso of this game on an emulator. Another possibility is playing Panzer General 2 on GoG.

Loved this game on the PC. After counter wargaming it was such a jump in 1994. The way the campaign branches, the little videos, the graphics...they were such a jump from what was before. My record for non stop gaming to this game is a 26 hour stint of Panzer General! Second and subsequent ones and clones, just didn't have that pull ..were too puzzle oriented and maps while more detailed were actually more cluttered, making it harder to work out terrain and optimal movement at a glance. Awesome game, even though airpower was a press to win option if you invested in fighters, tactical bombers and a few strategic bombers early. I would deliberately lose some battles so that I could defeat Normandy, Italy and Southern France invasions with level 5 aircraft and tanks. Great times. Thanks for this series of vids!
