I todays video we take a first look back at an old classic by SSI, Panzer General. The grandfather of the Panzer Corps, Strategic Mind, and a half dozen other games, Panzer General is an all time classic wargame that created a sub genre of wargames that have survived for 30 years.
Panzer General was a classic for me on PlayStation 1, so in todays video I take a look at the PS1 version of the game in what may become a weekly series looking at classic retro wargame titles.

30 years ago... wow! I am old... Do not forget to overstrength certain units, especially those that you finish off the ennemy with. In the north, the trick is to take the objectives as fast as possible and head inland. Objectives are all that matters

Sorry, 2nd comment. Tips. When attacking aircraft dont put your planes over AAA. The AAA can help in the defense. Also, dont put your planes next to enemy planes when attacking enemy planes, they get to defend too. Put your planes on one side of an enemy plane and attack. If you dont finish it off, attack with a 2nd plane but put it on the opposite side of the enemy plane so it is sandwhiched. If you dont finish it off it is stuck and cant escape as it can only move 1 hex. Thats how you prevent them flying off to reconstitute as more experienced troops. Also, never land troops inside the 2 hex range of coastal guns. When attacking AAA use artillery or engineers/Bridging units as they ignore entrenchement. You can use strategic bombers to soften them up and remove entrenchment but why let yourself take damage if you can just get artillery there to bombard it? Dont waste your Battleship and heavy cruiser dealing with Oslos defenses. Instead, have them move west at max speed, sink that torpedo boat on turn 1 and then wing around to the North at max speed to engage the British fleet. If you keep your northwestern naval force back from the coast and deal with those little ships while your amphibious forces land they wont get targeted by enemy planes as much. You can also get an infantry unit into the port there by turn 2 if you place it right. Then youre buying units there by turn 3. More tips? Just ask.

Okay, so bring your Northern subs across to the East. Have them stay out of sight until the Battleship or aircraft carrier come along then have them both strike it. Watch out for DDs. I usually have them go east then start going SE. They can catch the AC and BB. Now, I use my parachutists and BF109s and stuka first to take that SW airfield. There are 3 friendly dds there than can help you soften up land targets. Use the stuka to sink that Torpedo boat. Finish it off with the DDs and land two Airborne units therr to take that airfield and city. Now you have an airfield in Norway. Down south buy two more BG109s. Fly them up to Oslo and engage the enemy planes attacking your ships. Keep them out of range of AAA. Land a bridging unit or two and x2 artillery (3 range) there. Have them take out that coastal gun and take the city. Then use the bridging unit to cross the river and take the airfield. Use the arty tondestroy the AA gun first. Now you have a major toehold. Take your big ships west and have them hit that Torpedo boat immediately. You should be able to sink it. Then race them around the coast and meet up with your others ships. Use your Subs to sink cruisers and the Bzb and Carrier if you can. I usually get at least the BB, Carrier or a Heavy Cruiser before the DDs sink them. I usually land a tank unit, x1 arty, and x2 infantry up where you have the 2 DDs, lt cruiser and SuB to the NW. I use those DDs, cruiser and sub to sink one or more of the DDs then pull them South to the coast to support my landing. I buy an 88 and a truck there to deal with bombers. The 3 range makes it deadly. I take those ports then move East toward Trondheim. I usually buy a Stug arty to place behind infantry for defense. Meanwhile, I attack North with my main landing forces from Oslo and the southern coast taking those cities until I link up at Trondheim. Note, after I take the westernmost airfield I put my airborne units back on tranaports and fly them far East and then North up the map avoiding enemy AA, cities and planes. I have them jump onto the northwesternmost airfield waaaaaaay up there. 2 airborne should be enough to take them. Then I take the airbirne infantry west over the mountains and use them to pin whatever defenders are there for the VPs. You need 4 BF109s, 2 stukas for air threats and softening Trondheim. You need x3 artillery. By the time you get all your big ships North to join your support vessels the Brits will have moved down to trondheim. Keep your ships out of range until your Battleship and cruiser arrive them send the DDs out andnuse your big ships to sink whatever capitol ships are there focusing on the biggest ones first. Howeverz if you can snipe and damage lt cruisers while enemy ships tro and dislodge your forces around Trondheim do so. Use Stukas to pick off Torpedo boats and damaged lt cruisers. Take the trondheim airfield and hold it with a mobile AT gun Panzerjager with a Stug behind it and they wont be able to dislodge you. That way you can refuel at the airfield and give air cover to your boys. Once you take Trondheim you have to slog through that forest to take your final objectives. Well, you can also use the port and airfield to land forces behind them on the Northern shore and hit them from 2 sides. Questions? Let me know.

Can I suggest a way to find better strategies? Toggle the hidden units to be on when it's the Allied turn and off on your turn. This way, you learn how the Allied forces will react to different moves. You'll find there are some things you don't have to do, and there are easier ways to take objectives. For instance, prioritize air fields in the beginning. There are places to land troops that will get you these air fields faster. Experiment with different strategies until you find one that works.

Still have my copy..but no ps to play it on... certainly a classic... Remember if units get reforced by vets, you can add more than 10 troops over campaign ... i always put slow moving Pioneers and bridgers in half tracks... . And yes..seeing you play this, gets me shouting at the screen when you do something silly

When a unit gains an experience star, its max size increases by 1. A 10 can be reinforced to an 11 etc

I always concentrated my fleet ASAP also made sure to buy fighters and at least one naval bomber to take care of the British fleet

I certainly remember playing this and Allied General on the PS1, them (and Civ 1, PS 1 processing times were excruciating ) convinced me to get a gaming PC (meaning a 3DFX card). I also played a lot of Peoples General that was pretty good.

At 24:00 your attack went well against a rugged defense because your level bomber had suppressed them and they couldn't fight back. On this map I usually use the paratroopers to take the southwest town. Once it's captured they can use the airfield to get back in their planes and head north to assist where necessary. When it's raining park a bomber over a strong point you want to attack. Then when the rain clears you can attack with that bomber, fly it off and fly on a second bomber to attack.

You have 5 core units available. They should be on the battlefield attacking.

Half tracks are hard target, and they move slightly better than trucks offroad, making keeping up with tanks easier.

good luck with low countries it will be race to the channel, as it was historically be prepared to face some matildas and chars b1, so deffinitely another stuka would be good also, think about deploying in"battlegroups" of at least 2 tanks, 2 infantry and 1 artillery, for combined arms effort artillery softens up targets, tanks flank enemy and go after artilley , and finally infantry storms the enemy infantry

I would deliberately not get a major victory on certain maps just to make the game last longer. If you do it right, you can get double the maps that you would get if you only got major victories.

Careful of your terrain, units have worse defense and attack when on river tiles. You might also want to be a bit more aggressive with upgrades basic wehr infantry is terrible, definately need to upgrade to engineers or pioneers. Half tracks do have better movement on some terrain, trucks lose movement when not on roads. Also if you like ship warfare if you can find a copy of Pacific General it has tons of ship warfare and is really fun, but as far as I know it is only a pc game and is tough to find or even get working on new systems but still worth it if you can find it.

I've played both pz 1 2....I've never beat this game without the game Genie.... Russia is damn near impossible unless you turn off the supply

After the first video I started playing again and just finished Norway. I have to say that graphically the PC version has stood up very well. I always drop the paratroops in the centre, it helps to take those two centre cities early.

I always went after the airfields . without them the British have no air power. easy win.
