The Panther was a German medium tank developed in 1938 out of a project to replace the Panzer III and IV called the VK 20 series and design proposals were send in by Krupp, Daimler Benz and MAN. The VK20 design was abandoned as the requirements increased to a vehicle weighing 30 tonnes after he German army encountered the Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks. This would lead to the VK 30.02(DB) design, which would resemble the T-34 in hull and turret and i would also be powered by a diesel engine. The two designs were reviewed from January to March 1942. The MAN design embodied a more conventional configuration, with the transmission and drive sprocket in the front and a centrally mounted turret and the Daimler-Benz design was viewed to be superior to MAN's design. But because the MAN design used an existing turret designed by Rheinmetall-Borsig, and a mild steel prototype of the MAN design was produced by September 1942 and, after testing at Kummersdorf, it would be officially accepted. In January 1943 MAN produced the first production series Panther Ausf.D tank. It would be called the Panzerkampfwagen V Panther until 27 February 1944, when it was ordered that the Roman numeral "V" be deleted. The early Panther tanks were eventually send back in April through May 1943 for a major rebuilding program, because of major breakdowns. The first 250 Panthers were powered by a Maybach HL 210 P30 V-12 petrol engine, late versions would have got the Maybach HL 230 P30 V-12 petrol engine, but these first engines were plagued with mechanical problems. The engine was dangerously prone to overheating and suffered from connecting rod or bearing failures. Petrol leaks from the fuel pump and fuel-lines were also a problem and would produced fires in the engine compartment, this problem was never really solved and the Panther was the actual real Ronson tank. The Panther would see action with the Panzer Abteilung 51 on 9 January, and then Panzer Abteilung 52 on 6 February 1943, It would be seen as a necessary component of Operation Citadel, but the attack was delayed several times because of their mechanical problems, the same problems came back in the Battle of Kursk. Later versions of the Panther would be the A and G, and the last version was the F which would never see any action. Many features of the Ausf.D like the drum-shaped commander’s cupola and the thin rectangular hull machine gun port were still present on early production Ausf.A Panthers. They only changed mid production and not at the same time. Other modifications were introduced during the production run. Ausf.D and Ausf.A tanks were also upgraded with different features once they had been issued to a Panzer Division when they went to a maintenance or repair unit. Some changes to the Early and Late A tanks were changes to the turret and the gun mantle on the Ausf.A turret was wider than the one fitted to the older Ausf.D, the shape of the cast turret side had changed to a dish shape protrusion to fit the new seal for the gun mantle, three pistol ports were removed to make the armour stronger and of course the round drum like commander’s cupola, which would be replaced by a new dome shaped cast armor commander’s cupola. and in late November 1943 a ball mount Kugelblende with a spherical armoured guard was introduced onto the front glacis plate.

The Panther at Cologne that was hit by a Pershing, you have the series of shells hilling it and the vehicle going on fire. It had a unit (Sherman tanks) pinned down originally, the Pershing circled around and caught it by its side.
@dangerpowers5939 Жыл бұрын
The pershing was quiet Lucky as the panther commander didnt recognize the pershing siluette and thought it couldve been a german tank, so he told the gunner to hold fire.

0:05 German newsreel showing several Panther A and G tanks in a row. 0:21 Panther tanks in the Battle for Paris, although most of the armored tanks in this battle consist out of French captured tanks, there were a few Panther tanks available to the Germans, two of these vehicles captured that they by the French are still in the Saumur Tank Museum collection. 0:29 Panther tank crew seeming confused, not really knowing were the enemy is and not knowing that the FFI is even filming them. 1:14 Several Panther A and G on the move. 2:57 A Panther tank still returning after losing a track. 3:00 German training video with original sound. Very interesting footage including those rumbling around in Paris! The couple of Panther Ausf.A were tested in Sweden, apparently they had 5 of them, and was part of a long footage tested in various conditions with some Shermans for reference but those US tanks didn't go very well both in the mud and snow. It is worth to see how well the Panther was handling in various conditions and seems that it didn't had much problems on the heavy snow! A cool tank indeed...
@PanzerInsight3 жыл бұрын
What I find to be most interesting is that the Swedish video even fooled you, because if you look closely you can see the Panther fail several times but, before it really stops they cut away, I have no idea if this was done by the orginal editor or in the later stages.
@paoloviti61563 жыл бұрын
@@PanzerInsight oh, I didn't know that or better I was not observant as you! But I'm pointing out the the Swedish army didn't have powerful recovery vehicles and certainly couldn't work on the snow to tow the broken Panther to the shop to be repaired but I'm just guessing! But I do know that there was a Swedish Königtiger had to be chopped up as they couldn't tow it when it broke down. Now only the cannon survive by chance because they were ready to chop it up too not more than 10 years ago...
@PanzerInsight3 жыл бұрын
I do think they had no problem towing it because seen several pictures of the Tiger with a Dragon wagon in front of it.

@@paoloviti6156 Panther was designed for the Eastern Front and it was its primary hunting ground. Panther as a tank is completely different to anything that the Germans had in use prior to that and it was a completely different machine reflecting the change in the German strategic thinking. Panther is a tank designed to be a deadly machine on its own (unlike the early blitzkrieg tactics relying on combined arms) and had the highest muzzle velocity gun for penetration. Its driving capabilities were designed for the muddy steppes of the Soviet Russia. The eastern front created Panther. Conversely, it didn't do as well in Normandy where there were not as much open space

Towards the end of the war, panzer crews consisted of inexperienced soldiers and were driven to the front without adequate infantry or air support. This is how, many Panthers ended up.

You know the Russians would train dogs to under tanks by placing food under them. They had a bomb strapped to them and as they went under the tank the device would trigger by touching the tank and explode.

The dogs weren’t effective. They were either shot or since training under Soviet vehicles went to where the familiar scent was, Soviet tanks.
