For most of the war the Wehrmacht was a majority horse drawn army dependent on train transport for long range logistics. Not much different than WWI. These films were meant to give the impression to the viewer (especially foreign ones) that the whole German army was armored and highly mechanized.
@heinblod73504 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. So it has to view in a sense of a transition period. It was not sure to be successful in F 1940. Few components did it. Not so many new german tanks,many czech tanks, which where took over a year ago,the better equiped Luftwaffe ,the misleading of the french troops and the lack of technisation as 2-3 year later. Dunkirk was a failure of the germans in that context.

His initiative in disobedience of Hitler and the High Command was crucial in the quick defeat of France in 1940. When the XIX Army Corps broke the French lines at Sedan, Guderian carried out reconaissance in force without waiting for the follow up infantry and made a swift dash for the English Channel cutting the Allied frontline into two and trapping them at Dunkirk.

The Wehrmacht during early WW2 really kept things moving forward. They wanted to avoid repeating the quagmire of WW1. Their success was also due to French incompetence and obsolete methods. But most of all, it was largely due to the effectivity of the Manstein Plan.
@haroldgodwinson8324 жыл бұрын
The "Manstein Plan" was a serious gamble. If the French civil and military establish hadn't panicked, and if the French had actually committed their air force early, to attacking the German columns; it probably could have been stopped. But of course, that isn't what happened.

@@fpvillegas9084 Yes you're right they did, but too late. Sedan was too late. The French and Poles made the same mistake (it wouldn't have saved Poland however, due to the overwhelming force disparity). They waited too long and attempted to conserve their air forces for a later battle, that never eventuated. If they had attacked the German columns while on the road to Sedan they may have broken the German momentum. But they didn't of course.

Actually while the French tanks of the Somua S-35 and Char B-1 type were superior to German types in armor and possibly firepower, most French tanks were the smaller Hotchkiss H35, Renault R35 light and obsolete FT-17 tanks. The former two having somewhat decent armor at the time of around 40mm, but had the pathetically weak SA 18 type 37mm gun, a leftover from WW1 with very poor anti-tank capabilities, even for combating many of the lighter German tanks. The FT-17s were all only armed with machine guns in French service. The mobility for all three were horrible to not great as their suspensions and engined were prone to breaking down particularly in cross country travel. Last but certainly not least is that operationally and tactically all French tanks were inferior to their German counterparts. The French tanks had an inherit operational weakness of having small one man turrets for their main guns which meant the tank commander in the turret had to fulfill the roles of three different crewman. In German tanks these roles were separate allowing for better coordination and battlefield awareness on the part of the tank commander. Furthermore all German tanks had radios where only very few if any French tanks had them, usually relying on signal flags for communication. In addition, French tanks relied on tanker trucks for refueling, which were extremely vulnerable where as the Germans had developed portable petrol cans that could be carried even by the tanks themselves allowing for easier refueling and greater range and operational mobility. With the exception of tanks like the S-35, the German tanks were generally more mobile and could simply outmaneuver their French counterparts if they couldn't outgun them. Even the lowliest Pz II could take out a giant Char B1 bis, if it could get around to the side and put flanking fire in the vulnerable engine compartment through the armored grates on the side of the tank. So while it's been a stereotype that French tanks were superior to German panzers, the straight up analysis would show that in factors of mobility, crew effectiveness, communication, battle field tactics and operational effectiveness, as well as even firepower and armor in most cases, the Germans were by far superior. The idea of French tanks being superior is a myth and falsehood predicated on cherry picking data and not understanding what truly determines a tank's effectiveness.
@edrossman26544 жыл бұрын
Christian McDowell , most of what you said correct, but I have studied the Invasion of France for decades and I don’t know of any records where a Panzer II took out a Char B1. One of the big problems is the French put their best tanks in infantry support roles. 3-5 Char B1 may destroy the first 10-13 Panzers but you’re not going to beat the next 20. Once it was discovered the weak point of the Char B1 was the vent on the side, the Panzers would just circle around the Chars Rapidly and then aim for the vent. Most Chars and Somuas were taken out by Dive Bombers/Artillery/88s than actual tank on tank.And your also correct the rest of the French tank fleet was not as good as the Panzers and many of them were taken out in tank on tank battles.
@MrDirigible4 жыл бұрын
@@ich3744 while the Panzer III was later equipped with the 50mm cannon, the early models of Panzer III used in Poland and France were armed with only a 37mm cannon (besides MGs). The early StuG III's while getting the long barreled 75mm cannon were initially armed with the short barreled 75mm cannon similar to that used on the early Pz IVs. The idea again being direct infantry support against fortifications and enemy strong points rather than anti-tank capability. It would only be during the Russian and North African campaigns that German mechanized units would start to be significantly upgunned.
@MrDirigible4 жыл бұрын
@Alvaro Ruiz Cendon the short 75mm while no great ballistics was more than capable of knocking out most if not all French tanks, while the ammunition wasn't as prevalent the gun did come equipped with an early shaped charge round that was deadly even to the heaviest of allied tanks with over 80mm of penetration. Luckily for the allies the ammunition wasn't in abundance and most ammo loadouts on early Pz IVs and StuGs was HE, Smoke, AP-type ammo with very few if any any heat rounds carried. Regardless even the 37mm towed AT was sufficient to deal with most French tanks and if properly located for multiple fields of fire could either kill or mobility kill heavier French or British tanks. In cases were allied armor ran wild it was usually when the Germans were caught off-guard such as the British counter-attack at Aras with little to no time to properly deploy the AT.

I wonder if some has did a theoretical world war 2 outcome(not a game)were the could use modern weapons sans nuclear weapons and see who could have won the war but what I mean would be each country would have the same amount of armour,artillery,,naval ships,infantry,etc that they had at the beginning of the conflict......instance instead of Sherman tanks they would have M1A1 Abrahms tanks and stuff like that...I know the Germany uses Abrahms tanks too but it would be interesting to see

Nice propaganda footage. Always show the biggest and best tank. On June 10, 1940 the German divisions had: 523 Panzer I. 955 Panzer II. 398 Panzer III. 280 Panzer IV. 118 Panzer 35 (t) and 228 Panzer 38 (t). So more than half were cute little tanks I and II.
