this is sort of embarrassing to say but when I was in school they never really drilled in the basics for us, they only did for a semester and we basically moved on onto something else. For me I really wanted to get basic skills down and have a good understanding of it but I never knew whereabouts to look for such things, so thank you for sharing really good info!

they skip the most basics and make us work on advanced projects
@momonatu49983 жыл бұрын
There is no time for so many exercises but they do explain everything and then you apply it in more advanced projects. There are many aspects to take into consideration. I think it's difficult to exercise each one within so little time.

Yesss, gatekeeping of design is so so classist!! I hate it that people think that design has to be super exclussive and not accessible in order for it to be respected. Not only it creates a totally hostile enviroment, it keeps us from moving forward. Sharing knowledge, information, process and being able to talk about the nature of the market (so that we can SHAPE IT and not let it shape US) is so important. If you are a good designer you are a good designer, no matter what fancy, expensive school you did or didn't go to.

This was awesome, thank you ^_^ I'm a self taught traditional artist transitioning into digital (I draw characters now with backgrounds) and I have had 3 people in 1 week tell me that I should go into graphic design -_- So I thought that I would look into graphic design ^_^ I really liked your video and I agree that Art and Design is available to anyone willing to put in the effort to strengthen their skills ^_^ The basics are the fundamentals for Everything. From architecture, to martial arts, to painting, to photography, to dancing, to cooking, to music, to drawing, ect. You never escape the Basics because they are the Foundation for whatever craft, sport, job, and so on you decide to do. If you don't learn the basics for martial arts, you can get hurt. If you don't learn the basics in art, it can look wonky and off. If you don't learn the basics of cooking, you can get sick or have burnt food. If you don't learn the basics of swimming, you'll drown. Thank you for helping those of us who either don't do well in a school type setting or who don't have the resources to go to school. Thank you for sharing your love and passion of graphic design ^_^ Excitement is the light that gets one's attention. Passion is the warmth that for which one will stay. . . . And that concludes my 4am tangent ^^;

I love this video and the mindset behind taking down barriers when it comes to design. I did a program that was essentially a 2 year diploma fast-tracked into 5 months. I really liked it and I feel that it was the right choice for me, but it was still about as expensive as a standard two year diploma and so that’s definitely not accessible to a lot of people. We loose nothing from sharing our knowledge and resources from ppl who can’t afford post secondary

@@momonatu4998 It's overwhelming indeed. I've been following skillshare lessons and youtube tutorials for the past months and the few projects I finished may be seen as amateur work (because that's kinda what it is) but I'm proud of them nonetheless because I'm doing them all on my own. Once the pandemic situation gets better I will attend some kind of course on graphic design, sadly going to school is not an option for me financially. Good luck to you as well! :)
@momonatu49983 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It's quite hard, because it's a lot, really a lot of work (we have to deliver projects every week), you end up exhausted but if you love it, it's satisfying. I have also improved a lot in drawing (we have art class), because I haven't been drawing for a long time since I was busy with else before. And we have a lot of illustration too, which is great. There is nothing about my course which I don't like. I find everything really interesting and fun and feel lucky to have found my path. So I am very happy I decided to study this, though I am a bit older now (I used to work in another field before this :) but I believe that people are not made for doing all the same thing till they die, because we all change in life, though I have always had a talent and passion for art), which actually is an advantage, because I have realized I have more life experience than other students now and this helps me to understand better many different concepts and learn faster. Really worth it if you start late. So just keep working hard on your dream no matter the age, what others say etc.!

Not looking to be a graphic designer myself (I wanted to have more design resources in order to mess with social media stuff), but I agree so much with your statements - anyone, if given the proper research and study material, can work their way into art and design. It shouldn't be a classist club that only allows access to those who can afford college - sometimes college doesn't teach everything either. You're doing great, and thanks so much for the recommendations! I'll be looking into more of your videos as well.

Thank you so much for calling out classism in design. Honestly, if I had known what design college was going to be like (a bunch of BS, definite gatekeeping), I wouldn't have done it. Anyone CAN be a designer if they work at it, just like anyone can become good at drawing if they practice a lot, a lot, a lot. It has nothing to do with "natural talent", a bachelor's or master's degree, anything like that.
