0:50 is for me a great example how football has changed over the years. Overmars tripped a bit, but stayed on his feet, even though he lost the ball. Almost any player now would go down to try and get the penalty.

Maldini was already no more at his prime (he was 33) but still one of the very best defenders in the world (in my opinion one of the best players, not just defenders). At his prime he was much better, try to immagine it.

Mattia Santangelo come on overmars is overrated, from 1:20 till the end of the video all he tries to do is outrunning Maldini and he isn’t even able to do that. He never dribbled, was one of those players that could score so many goals against a bad team but didn’t make the difference in important games

He wasnt really keeping up in speed he would have been destroyed by overmars in a sprint duel. Instead he defended with great positioning and incredible tackling which is how he compensated being slower.

Italy played with 10 men for over 90 minutes of course (over an hour of the match and all of extra time). You can't underestimate how much tenacity it took for Italy to hold on against the host nation, in a semi final, with one player down (Zambrotta sent off). Toldo man of the match with his penalty heroics.

Man what happened back then, I remember it as yesterday being a 12 year old kid from Amsterdam. Might even be "The" greatest generation of dutch players.. Playing at home, the vibe was on, streets and whole neighborhoods where dressed in orange. Who was going to touch us? And my respect to the great Italian national team, but we where so much better.. but as the minutes where thicking away you already knew how it was going to end... unbelievable.. Still great memories.

I am dutch, but still all respect to the Italian master of defence. What a defender hé was, very artistic, elegant, strong and intelligent. 👌
