+TimsDale4ever Yes, the acting, the writing and production were all much better in "daytime drama" in the 1960s and '70s. Also, there were many more stage-trained actors than fashion models in the casts of the soaps when most of them were New York-based. Now, if I'm not mistaken, the four remaining soaps (two on CBS, one each on ABC and NBC) are all Hollywood-produced.

I think the P&G soaps, when they got an actor or actress whom they really liked, they tried to keep them employed, so they wouldn't risk losing them to another soap. When Rodell left GL, she pretty much began as Joyce on ATWT almost immediately, and same with Barbara Berjer. She was killed off as Claire on ATWT somewhere around 1971, and almost the next very week, she started playing Barbara on GL.

Mark Hulswit was a wonderful Ed.
@gymnastix9 жыл бұрын
+TimsDale4ever He sure was. And his predecessor, Robert Gentry, was a pretty good "Dr. William 'Ed' Bauer, Jr." too. But the character as played by Gentry was angry (and eventually, actively alcohol-dependent) most of the time, not as gentle as Hulswit's portrayal. I had stopped watching "The Guiding Light" by the time it dropped the "The" from its title, so never saw much of Peter Simon' s "Dr. Ed," even though I think Simon overtook Hulswit as the actor in that role the longest. I remember Peter Simon most for his wonderful portrayal of attorney "Scott Phillips" in "Search for Tomorrow, where he had many scenes with the then-new (and wickedly evil) Morgan Fairchild as "Jennifer Pace Phillips," as well with Courtney Sherman Simon ("Kathy Parker Phillips"), who became Simon's wife in real life, and also a versatile actress and writer on several soaps. Peter Simon also had a memorable screen relationship with Christopher Lowe, the young actor who portrayed his adopted son, "Eric Leshinsky Phillips," in "Search." Watching the two of them interact was not unlike Dustin Hoffman and Justin Henry in the Oscar-winning film "Kramer vs. Kramer." They were that good. I was always so pleased the character of "Eric" wasn't a victim of that SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid-Aging Syndrome) practice which affects so many young characters in daytime dramas, and that Chris Lowe was allowed to hang around for several years. This was also a privilege afforded Tommy Michaels, who portrayed "Timothy 'Tim Man' Hunter Dillon" in "All My Children," another gifted and natural young actor in his time. Can you just imagine if Glenn Walken had been allowed to continue portraying "Michael Bauer" in "(The) Guiding Light?" And would his better-known brother, Christopher, have continued to substitute for him into adulthood? I wonder if Mart Hulswit is still acting? Did you know just a few years (in 1965-66) before he joined the cast of "The Guiding Light" Hulswit portrayed a doctor in a little prime time medical series called "Dr. Kildare?" Yes, Hulswit was featured in several episodes of the last season (Season ) of the popular NBC medical drama portraying the young "Dr. Vincent Brill," a co-worker and friend of Richard Chamberlain's "Jim Kildare" at "Blair General Hospital." Hulswit just always had that fresh-scrubbed look of a young doc in those days, I guess. Perusing Hulswit's other acting roles in that time period, it looks as if he portrayed a doc in a few other TV series' too.

It was interesting to get a glimpse of the characters Janet and Ken Norris. I would love to see an episode or some posted from the early to mid 70's when Roger Thorpe first came to Springfield and also what led Ken Norris into mental instability. I know at the time Ken was jealous of Ed because of his wife Janet's friendship with him which led him to shoot Ed and ultimately wound up in a mental hospital although I did not see many GL episodes at that time because I was in school. My mom since has passed on but was a fan of GL back then. My question if anyone knows is was Ken Norris somewhat like Roger Thorpe as far as being a nemesis of Ed Bauer?
@ACcountryFan9 жыл бұрын
+Tommy Parker According to the GL anniversary books Ed had previously had an affair with Janet prior to her marriage to Ken. So, yes, in a way, Ken happened to be just as paranoid of Ed as Roger happened to be during his marriage to Holly. Ken, though, didn't calculate schemes or manipulate people...Ken more or less lost his mind and couldn't separate his fictionalized images of seeing Ed and Janet in romantic embraces from the reality of Ed and Janet having no feelings for each other anymore. Roger, on the other hand, never lost his mind...in spite of the treachery and terror he caused and his extreme paranoia and low self-esteem almost every thing he did to Ed, Holly, Rita, Adam, Alan, Hillary, Blake, Dinah and others he always maintained his sanity (although Dinah attempted to gaslight him but he caught on and played along).

Does anybody know how I can get audio or video of Stanley Norris' murder on The Guiding Light?
@gymnastix9 жыл бұрын
+Bob Smith Good luck finding that one, which I recall was in 1971 or '72. Anyway, the era of "Stanley Norris" (portrayed by William Smithers) is also the era when the television networks allegedly engaged in "wiping" their daily programming, so they could re-use the then-expensive videotapes for future programming, as well to conserve storage space. Or at least that is the story we've all been fed. But you may notice this episode here is from 1973, and appears just as pristine clear as the very day I watched this episode when originally broadcast. So my suspicion is there are more episodes from 1967-80 in existence (Procter & Gable and/or CBS vaults, a former actor's basement, a sometime writer's attic, etc., and/or in the possession of creator Irna Phillips' descendants, and/or by Agnes Nixon). In any event, I wouldn't give up just yet. And the notion of an audio recording of the episode turning up is actually not that far-fetched, as I have read this has happened before, most prominently in the surfacing of a TV audio recording from November 22, 1963, NBC booth announcer Don Pardo reading bulletins about the (at that point) attempted assassination of then-35th President of the United States John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. NBC News had yet to fire up its studio cameras for coverage, with CBS ("The Tiffany Network") and its principal "Evening News" anchor, Walter Cronkite, beating the "The Peacock Network" to the punch on that one. But NBC was on-air first with the audio from Pardo, and these first news bulletins of the Dallas shootings of JFK and Texas Governor John Connally were recorded by an individual at home with his own tape recorder, that have been preserved all these 50+ years later.

Wiping isn't "alleged" and it isn't a "story"--it is fact. Most of television including soaps, game shows, newscasts, shows like the Today and Tonight shows were mostly erased during the first two or so decades of television. A few soap episodes surfacing from the period prior to 1978 doesn't mean much and certainly doesn't mean there are more. 1978 was the first year CBS/P&G decided to preserve and archive the episodes.
