6 жыл бұрын

This week Papa Doug (Tom's step dad) is coming all the way from California for a visit! He's sleeping in the girls' room, so all 8 kids are bunking up in the boys' room for the week. Papa Gary came over to eat with us every night while Papa Doug was visiting so we had lots of fun together. Papa Doug and Papa Gary have birthdays two days apart in the beginning of September so we ended Papa Doug's visit with a double birthday party. While Papa Doug was here he helped Tom put up some shelves in the bike shed, we went out to eat at China King Buffet, we went bowling, plus our usual trip to see Grandma Fern and Story Hour at the library. We got our van back from the repair shop after nearly a week; the second air conditioning repair cost $650 after the original $1,200 repair! We're back on the road, though, and nobody's baking in the back seat.

Just a little word of advise from an avid camper. If you leave your sleeping bags out in the shed over the winter, I recommend putting them in garbage bags. Or else you might get mould or mice in them.

I can't get enough of your vids!! :) Your family is awesome. It was so funny to see Judah in the bushes with the pup. Is Knuckles sick? Just curious, as I noticed he's moving a bit slow and seems to have some discoloration / redness to his skin. I hope and pray all is well. I know how special family pets can be.

Knuckles is an old dog these days and he's got mange. For several years we thought he had allergies, but eventually we figured out it's a difficult kind of mange. I've lost count of the treatments we've tried on him and as he ages it just gets worse. He seems like such a sad dog sometimes! Tom just heard of some new miracle treatment a few days ago so he ordered it. We'll see if it helps; we can always hope!

@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 6 жыл бұрын
When Tom was 10, his dad died. Kitty then married Doug. Shortly after Tom and I were married, Grandma Kitty divorced Doug and married another man who has since passed away. We've remained very close with Papa Doug even though he returned to California. The summer before my mom died, Doug married Donna. My parents always went with us to California and the trip out there for Doug and Donna's wedding was our last vacation together.

He's Tom's step dad (Grandma Kitty's 2nd husband.) When Tom was 10, his dad died. Then Grandma Kitty married Doug. When I was pregnant with Thomas, she divorced Doug and married another man who has since died. About 8 years ago, Doug married Donna. Papa Gary is my dad, though not biologically. (I didn't meet my biological dad until I was pregnant with Thomas. We wrote letters for a time, but he ended that because his step daughter didn't like me being in his life.) Papa Gary has raised me since I was 2. It's all a bit convoluted!

What major restaurants are in your area? Besides Applebee's.
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 6 жыл бұрын
In our little town we have a Subway and a diner (which was actually built by my grandparents when my mom was an infant.) The town 30 miles from us where Applebee's is also has Old Chicago, Ruby Tuesday, Sonic, Perkins, Buffalo Wild Wings, Pizza Hut, Little Ceasar's, Domino's, Subway, Qdoba, Taco John's, Taco Bell, KFC, Burger King, McDonald's, Quiznos, Wendy's, Arby's, Jimmy John's, Hardee's, Dairy Queen, A & W, Long John Silver's and lots of local places. Now that I've listed these all out it's re-inspired me to make a list for Tom and I. We'd planned to do that once so we could try to go someplace different on our date nights.

We've had plans for a long time on what we'd like to do to add onto the house, but we don't want to borrow money to do it which is why we've never done the work. At this point, it's not happening. I'm SO late getting to these lately! I guess that's what happens once I go back to work. In any case, two questions: What were the books that the Papas got for their birthdays? I tried to see the title but I couldn't quite make it out. And is Papa Gary a leftie? I'd never noticed before but I saw that his fork was in his left hand at 20:20 and it made me wonder. All the BEST people are lefties, you know. ;-)
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 6 жыл бұрын
My sister got those books for Dad and Papa Doug so I'm not sure of the titles, but they were some sort of devotional. Yes, Papa Gary is a lefty. Both of my parents were, though all of us kids are right-handed. Papa Doug is a lefty, too, and so is Tom's grandma Jane and my grandma Lois.

Yes, I hadn't really thought about it but here's a chart on our town for 2001-2015. There was one murder (which actually happened a block from our house). There's some petty theft and bar fights, generally, but nothing ever very exciting. :) www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Moorcroft-Wyoming.html

Andrea Mills I believe we have low crime and lots of people here don't lock their houses or cars BUT there is no way our bikes would still be in a bike shed like what you have out the front of your house. A week after we moved here (our town has a population of 1900 people) there was a murder over the main road from us and before then (and after then) I don't think there have been any acts of violence and we have no bars but two bottle shops. Congratulations again on the baby. Have you been feeling sick at all?

I've never heard of blanket training as a form of punishment. The only thing I ever heard of (and did) was have a toddler sit for a minute or two using a timer and they got a treat when time was up. As far as I knew from the Duggars, that's what they meant by it, too. It seems weird to me that the google search shows a swaddled baby (which is a normal thing for parents to do) next to a blurb about using blanket training as a form of corporal punishment. I think someone is trying to make something seem nefarious by mixing two harmless ideas (swaddling and teaching toddlers to sit still) and saying it's abuse.

We tried that method a little with Justus and Eden using a pillow. Really, though, I think just using the highchair works. Back in the 1800s, Charlotte Mason discussed how children need to be trained in the habit of attention. I've felt like just putting the kids in their highchair and letting them watch what's going on with the family or having a small toy to play with is helpful. They get practice just being still for awhile. I think it also helps that we don't have a lot of toys available to them at any given time so they sit and play with one thing longer than when there are toys everywhere. The final part is that the more kids you have, the more the little ones just fall into line because there are so many big kids setting a good example. You create a family culture and you don't have to start from scratch with each child.
