Moromi-miso is a bit like nattou, but much less slimy and far more tasty. It has a delightful salty fermented flavour and none of the icky texture of nattou. It's often paired with thin slices of cucumber as an appetizer. Agedashi tofu is of the Elder Culinary Gods, possibly one of my favorite treats on this good green Earth.

I would try the Natto. Even if I don't like it, I would try it least one more time. It seems like every country has a food that isn't designed to be appetizing or delicious, but it still serves a function. In the case of Natto, it's a superfood, pungent, very good for you, doesn't care that it puts people off, but I could see myself eating it just for the reason of adapting to its taste. I did that with cilantro as one of those people whose genetic disposition makes cilantro tastes like soap. I can eat it now, my palate has adjusted to it and it's not soapy anymore. I'm also increasing my tolerance for spicy food by trying things outside of my comfort zone. I've gone from a 3-out-of-10 to a 6-out-of-10 and can handle generally "hot" foods. I can handle black anchovy sauce, Marmite (I grew up in Britain, I was raised on it), and I've even had kefir once. I want to try salty licorice one day, too. I won't touch anything I think is going to make me ill, which is why I'm cautious around fermented foods. In many cultures, people respect you more for eating the "Natto" of their country. It's often seen as how boys become men as it is instrument of cultural bonding, seeing as if you can eat something that makes a nation's own people tremble in fear, you deserve a lot of respect, especially as a foreigner.

The odd thing about Japanese cuisine is the fact that has very few dishes that are authentically Japanese. Ramen a CHINESE dish originally named Lamian. It came into Japan in the 1800's when Chinese people migrated into Japan. Most tofu dishes originate from China as well. As for the curry. Japanese style curry is based off European curry. Japanese people have low spice tolerance so the western variant of curry suits their tastebuds more.

Christmas isn't a holiday there but they like to celebrate it because it is fun. I think it is popular for young couples but also families with little kids. Since there is no turkey sold there (well not as widely available as the US) Chicken is the next best thing. Back in the 70s? KFC ran an aggressive ad campaign to convince people to eat there for Christmas and it has been a thing since. They aren't buying fried chicken though. I think it is rotisserie or grilled somehow and they sell different sides that are more Christmas oriented. you'll see long lines there around Christmas and I heard that you need to order way in advance. kurisumasu ni wa kentaki! Yeah, in Japan they don't mix any part of their curry. The rice is on one side, the liquid/stew is on the other and the chicken/pork cutlet is laid on top. Submerging the cutlet like that ruins the cutlet.

Not sure where you guys got that katsu curry dish - but Japanese curry isn't supposed to be strong like say a real deal Indian curry etc. It's supposed to be mild and not spicy at all. Even UK based curries can be stronger and spicer than Japanese curries are (usually, there are spicy Japanese curry dishes of course).
@LuckyOwI7778 ай бұрын
strong doesn't mean spicy
@LordLOC8 ай бұрын
@@LuckyOwI777 I never said stronger meant spicy. I just said a Japanese curry is usually mild in flavor and not spicy while Indian curry (or other curries) is stronger in flavor (sometimes using tamarind etc.) and usually spicy but not always.
