The iconography on the boards may be valuable. You can put the boards in a clean plastic garbage bin with a tight-fitting lid. Place charcoal briquettes in the bottom and put a rack over it, stack the wooden pieces up, and close it up for about two weeks. The charcoal will absorb the mold and then you can take them outside and gently brush the surfaces with a soft brush.

Another idea is to do a search for wood refinished or ppl who build from used/scrap wood, and strike up a friendship with them. They usually all have trucks to haul wood. If they are close enough to you, they will buy any pieces of old furniture/wood you don't want. May save you dump fees plus a little extra $. If not, at least you tried. Wgen I was young, I found used furniture, refinished or painted it. Had the energy & time, just little $. There are also free or cheap costing flyers published in smaller towns. Or places to post FREE items for pickup. Like at grocery stores, bars, etc. Places you may pass. Just some ideas...😊
@ginger_grizzlyАй бұрын
Without seeing it close up the furniture may have been salvageable if it was just surface grime. We pick up pieces like this all the time from the reseller areas in our local waste transfer sites. We just vacuum off all surfaces inside and out, then a going over with a damp cloth with a bit of washing up liquid on it will soon remove and mould or mouse pee or fly poop. Then we what we do if the furniture is pre 1980s which means it is made from traditional materials like solid wood or plywood and finished with a lacquer or varnish is to clean it deeper with a three part cocktail that brings life and shine back to the wood. Get yourself an empty and clean jam jar with a lid, pour into the jar equal measures of boiled linseed oil, white spirit and methylated spirits, put the lid back on tight and give the jar a shake to mix the contents then remove lid and apply the cocktail to a clean, soft rag (old tees are ideal) and generously wipe the surface of the furniture with it, shake the jar before each application as the contents will separate. When you have finished cleaning the item with this brew leave it to dry for 10-20 mins, then buff the treated surfaces with another clean, soft rag and the furniture will look as good as new!

The religious paintings on board are Orthodox icons, the Saint slaying the dragon is St. George who was one of the patron saints of Russia.

Yep and along with the Romanian currency it would suggest a very strong Eastern European link to the unit. It’d be interesting to learn the history of who had the unit tbh.

If I were going to guess, I would say the storage unit belonged to a Romanian woman. Why: one of the coins found, iconography looks similar. She lived through communism and learned to value her belongings, having had to live with scarcity. Also, the cookbooks were dear to her because of her mother's land food, which she treasured and probably prepared herself.
@fareast_deАй бұрын
Good eyes ! You could be right, because the price tag on one of those icons was in Lei, which ist the currency of Romania. 👍
@Gabriele-sv9qgАй бұрын
I strongly support the theory that the renter of the storage unit was a lady from Romania. The icons are not very old, but were obviously made using the traditional painting technique (as can be seen in the damaged areas): Egg tempera on stucco, background gilded, probably on a red bolus ground. Icons are the sacred images of the Eastern Church; the lady was probably of the Orthodox faith. A somewhat different and very interesting storage unit. Congratulations again, Renée! Gabriele - Berlin
@fareast_deАй бұрын
@@Gabriele-sv9qg Absolutely agreed. I also think that these icons are "newerish", because they don´t have much patina or something that we call "Krakelee". But: who am I to give a decent expertise on icons ! Gute Einschätzung, Gabriele !
@Gabriele-sv9qgАй бұрын
The storage unit didn't have a document with the renters's name, but the content provides some clues. Work for Sherlock Holmes 🕵🏻. The museum where I worked also had a collection of icons. I wasn't responsible for it, but I know some of the basics.

Renee I had a $20 unit I got last month as well. Some mice there because they had stored food. Some very used furniture and lots of half open cardboard boxes scattered around. 10x10 unit and based on ' looks '.. why it sold for $20. Not looking very appealing. Had some totes or boxes with brand new unopened small appliances, bedding and various boxes of youth sized New Uggs. as well as other resellables. Uggs are good. But the kicker at the end was something that did NOT belong there based on how unit was stored and its contents. Some black plastic bags with clothing/coats on hangers. One had a label but no identifier. The company (was sold to SF Based Emporium stores-now closed as well ) made clothing and based on label date appears to be 1960's Vintage... Black Mink Coat. The other coat which had a content label said Russian Black Rabbit Fur. Did NOT expect to find that in a trashy $20 unit. "You never KNOW what you are going to find "

I'm glad you and others can do this because items can not sit around and rot. I went to one estate sale years ago with a coworker on our lunch hour. We started looking around and then I noticed personal pictures on the wall, and I started feeling sad that this was someone's life. I guess if they had family, no one wanted the pictures of their family. The pictures may have been from the 60s or 70s when they were in midlife and living their best lives. The couple were well dressed in that era when younger people started dressing more casually. The lady was probably in her 50s with a beehive hairdo and pencil skirts and nice house dresses and the man had his polyester suits for casual attire. Anyway, I wish the estate company would have depersonalized this house. We left within 10 minutes and have never been back to an estate sale. 😢 Kathleen

Those paintings on wood are called studies, they are the rough work to larger completed studio-size paintings like the big painting of Paris you found, should seriously consider getting them evaluated by an Expert, I would recommend Dr. Lori Verdanmae it is possible each one could be worth over 5 grand a piece if they are not reproductions which I don't think they are.
