I think this song is about invalidating your own feelings. A papercut is usually really small and not that deep, but it still hurts like hell. So by comparing personal experiences to a papercut, it's saying that this event seems small but it still really hurts. But then you get told (either by other people or yourself) that it's not a deep gash so it's not a big deal, ignoring the fact that regardless of the significance or severity, it still hurts.

Ever since I can remember, I have been through hell with abuse. I thought it was normal for all the screaming and fighting, I remember the first time I told an adult. She was horrified when I had told her that I witnessed my mother kicking my brother down the stairs and screaming at my dad while drunk. I told her it was the first time that happened because of how worried she got. I had a teacher that took care of me and got me on a school lunch program, she would brush my hair in the morning and made sure I was okay. I never told anyone after. I was so convinced it was okay until I had a friend bring up times she saw my family beat me or yell when I was a kid. Recently I opened up to my councillor about my parents and when she told me it wasn’t my fault and that I was just a kid, I broke into tears. I’m 20 and still feel like that same broken kid. My mom tried to hit me recently but only stopped due to me being on the phone. At the time I was in a group home and told the staff that if I was going to be discharged from the home I couldn’t go back due to my mother threatening me. They called my mom and they thought I was lying, so they told my mom and she told them it was all a lie. I was furious and cut off contact for months. I’m not letting the innocent child in me be hurt and convinced otherwise. I’m a survivor of abuse and after all these years I can say it without guilt or shame in myself.

Here recently it's been causing my health issues to get worse. Mental abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse. Under no circumstances is abuse ever right. No matter what form abuse takes it causes permanent scars that may not always show on skin level but it doesn't make them any less.

At 12 I was in my Melanie Martinez phase, and this was my favorite song. I've come back three years later and can totally see why I loved this song so much. I've also realized how many meanings she put in it. I feel like this song brings up minimizing your feelings, gaslighting, self-harm, having a mother who cheated, and having an abusive father with an alcohol addiction. It's just an amazing song that I believe almost everyone can relate to in some way.

This song has helped me a lot. My boyfriend of 2 years broke up with me a month ago and this song is so personal to me. It's nice to hear the "I know you miss those kisses, there are so many fishes' helps me know that even though he's done this and broken my heart and all our dreams and plans together, there is most certainly someone who will appreciate and love me for me out there (it could even be him again once he's matured and 'figured himself out' or it might not). It's also nice to know that although this breakup has been earth-shattering and feels like I've lost my whole world, it could be worse, it could be what he's done along with me losing my family members; so this song is a huge comfort in knowing 1. I'm not alone, 2. I will find love again whether that be him or someone else and 3. It could be so so much worse, yes, it absolutely sucks and is painful and its important to acknowledge that, but it could always be so so much worse, and so, there are positives in that I still have the other people that I love in my life.

The chorus comforts themself in saying how papercuts aren’t really that bad, it’s only just one. I’ve had friends who have c*t themselves as they find comfort in it. They say “I won’t do it that much anymore” still implying that they’re going to keep doing it just not that often to be seen as “harmful” (which it really is still harmful and btw, they have gotten help and are much happier and they’re doing ok). One thing I especially like about this song is the line about the brown-eyed baby with blue-eyed parents as, although babies are significantly more likely to have blue eyes if both of their parents have them, it is still quite common for babies with blue-eyed parents to be born with brown eyes as the gene that makes eyes brown is dominant, while the gene that makes eye blue is recessive. I see people fighting over the meaning of „papercut” so here is my interpretation:in my interpretation „papercut” is about aßusive fathers.From the lyrics it seems like a father talking to ”his” child about how their mother cheated(„beautiful blue eyed parents,if mommy says she never tells a lie why the f*ck do you have big brown eyes?”)and later on in the song he justifies his aßusive behavior (like beating them and their mother) by saying „it could be worse”.In conclusion, the situation is like a papercut,percieved by the father as small,but in reality hurts very much.This song describes exactly how it is,when you have an aßusive father who dosent love you and your mother who cheated.
