A sheynem dank, Herr Hauptmann! This is a worthy attempt at a very difficult song, often presented in too sentimental a tone by singers who understand it to be a theater song, suitable for an operatic diva, or indeed for a female voice, since this is a song not for a civilized, educated, professional singer of outstanding intelligence with superb performance skills, but trying to get across the exhausted street kid (a boy on the street trying to sell matches in the rain.) You do a wonderful job and get there to, I think, the extent possible. The kids in memory of whose voices this song was written did, many of them, die in the streets. This is why it is so tough to make it into a tango, swing or German cabaret number. It is not a shmaltzy, sentimental song. It is not a theater song in the reality it envisions, a reality that still exists in this world, to our shame. It is not to be wept over. Weeping big tears over the corpse of a child who is dead of hunger, exposure, and human inhumanity is not going to bring the child back or cause those now alive to be rescued. This is a song of desperation, and it will take some practice to sing it so as to get that across to a comfortable audience of listeners anywhere on the face of this earth. I don't know that as a student of Yiddish song I would ever have the voice for this, but I admire anyone who makes the attempt, especially an attempt as serious as yours. Danke schön!

t's a cold foggy dark night a boy stands, saddened, looking around only a wall shelters him from the rain he holds a little box in his hands and his eyes beg everyone. I have no strength left in me to walk around in the street, hungry and torn up, wet from the rain. I drag around from the start but nobody is buying everyone laughing and teasing me. come buy, buy my cigarettes dry, the rain has not gotten to them. buy, these are really cheap buy, have pity on me save me from hunger come buy these good matches with this you'll be saving an orphan forgive my shouting and my running nobody wants to buy from me, I'll have to go out like a dog (die) My father, in the war has lost both his hands, my mother could no longer tolerate the misery. she was young when she went to the grave, and I was left in this world, sad and lonely as a stone. I gather bits and crumbs to eat in this cold market, a hard bench is where I lay in the cold park. and the police brutally beat me, my pleading and crying don't help. I had a little sister, a child of nature, She would drag around with me all year long. With her it was much easier for me, more bearable used to be the hunger, when I could just take a glance at her. Suddenly, she became weak and very ill. She died in my hands on a street bench. And as I lost her, I gave up on everything May death come take me already. lyricstranslate.com/de/papirossen-cigerettes.html
