i would think it would be just adding an even number of wraps of both cords around the dowel to the desired length.

Indeed. From there, the tying method is the same, just with a few more under-overs.

Note to self: get some dowels. Also, for snake knots, etc. a small crochet hook is helpful to save your nails/fingertips
