The Taught Line Hitch is used to tighten guy lines on tarps and tents without the use of a mechanical devise. It's a great knot, super easy and quick to tie, secure under tension, and easily untied even after heavy loading. The Taut-Line Hitch is an awesome knot. With this basic knowledge, you can lighten your camping gear load. Ultra-light backpackers take heed! It's called a Prusik knot (often misspelled Prussik, Prussick or Prussic), and probably best know by rock climbers and tree surgeons, though mechanical Prusiks are often used these days. An important variant is the Schwabish Prusik knot.
