@@Kryptixthats a ridiculous point to make - we rely on news organisations to keep us informed and do journalism on things that aren’t in the eye of the general public. Yes there is information on Google about the Papua conflict but how pray tell would someone come across this having never been exposed to it before? That’s the job of the news. If I read a Fox News, or New York Times article about a topic, say Donald Trump, I’m then going to go out and do my own research and decide whether he’s a horrible person and president, or the second coming of christ, or somewhere in between, but I’d never stumble across Donald Trump, or know what the American political system was like if news outlets didn’t report on that first, and thats the same in this case.

It's sad that Australians have lost it, but to be frank we've lost it everywhere. The smaller parts of news organizations that had journalists willing to take these risks for either chasing their 'big break' into the mainstream or because of a genuine drive to report this are shuttered because they don't make enough money to survive anymore. Even people like Jordies are censored because KZbin doesn't like people talking about the horrid realities that exist in our world. It doesn't help that we've been hearing these same things for literally decades. Small countries running absolutely brutal and atrocious campaigns against their people being funded by Western governments and corporations because the Westerners are making significantly more then what they're spending. There's some outrage about a specific incident for a couple of months, then another rises up to the forefront of the news cycle and the outrage shifts to that without changing policy or putting sanctions on the corporations for fear that 'our' enemies will exploit them when we don't. And so it goes on and on and on without anything changing, and people get fatigued about hearing how horrible the world is and how we treat our fellow human beings. So we tune out, go looking for more cat videos or about heroes standing up a bit closer to home. They start speaking about protecting 'our own first' so we don't end up like _them_ . Railing against slights as though it's the same as these brutal regimes. Trading bits of liberties that we do have at a time to 'protect' us against these atrocities. And as long as we're comfortable, we don't care what happens to someone else.

This mess has been going on for decades. Had a long conversation with a guy at the pub around 10-15 years ago that worked in a few of these gold mines. The mining camps are basically military fortresses, surrounded by 12ft razor wire fences, watch towers and hired armed forces/paramilitary that guard them 24/7. Said was hard to sleep due to constant machine fire coming from the jungle most nights, they needed heavily armed security and combat vehicles to transport mine workers to and from the sites, and was very common to see dead bodies left on road sides throughout out the jungle. But apparently pay was stupid good so he kept going back 😵‍💫 good to see some light getting shined on the horror show the locals have been in for so long

Also, bows don't have serial numbers, anyone can make one, anyone can make ammo for one, and with knapped broadheads the 100+ lb draw on a hunting bow will cut through a Kevlar flak jacket like cardboard. Sure, they don't kill AS fast, but for a piece of wood it's still surprisingly effective, the main drawback's how much practice they take to use effectively.

Yes, they did. But of course that would be a suicide if a country tell the people about what bad things they do to another group. well you see, during the Cold War the western countries, which includes Australia and USA, armed and trained a lot of right wing militias (sound familiar?) in Indonesia, who perpetrated a mass killing in 1965 (i.e., genocide) of leftists, communists, peasants, and foreigners and a takeover by the right wing military. That government is basically still in charge, and Australia and the US and all of Europe are ok with that because they hate China and want to surround them with military allies, even if it means supporting literal authoritarian dictatorships. This is basically a similar to what the United States and the west have done in Korea, Nicaragua, Vietnam, the Philippines, Samoa, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Albania, Thailand, Egypt, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and anywhere else where poor people dare to try and take a little power for themselves.

As an Indonesian, the current government began more "social infrastructure development" in Papua in 2017. Even I know that's just a guise for Indonesian military presence increasing. The reason Indonesia refuses to cede territory other than money is by the machinations of the now deceased dictator Soeharto. Over his 30 years of bloody reign, he used CIA and American influences to influence (for lack of a better word) the younger generation into believing Indonesia needed a strong military presence in South East Asia, as to why Operasi Dwikora (invading Borneo) and Operasi Trikora (annexing West Papua) took place. That same generation is the government in charge. Lets pray that in the coming years the younger generations of my corrupt government can free West Papua

Of course the old dude will go full corporate speech because he is paid to do so. Instead do ask them from far away like "what is company's stance on illegal usage of weapon?" etc. I remember, I watched a documentary on Boeing long ago where interviewer just started insulting the higher up manager for underpaying the employees, and really was pushing on "emotional buttons'. The interviewer, of course, got security called on him. Unfortunately, that is what modern journalism has overused too much - beeing too blunt with interviewed person and emotional manipulation. The Papuan’s helped rescue Australian soldiers during World War 2 when the Japanese were invading. The fact that we aren’t helping them is shameful to me. Edit: It appears I’ve been misinterpreted, so I’ll do my best to explain my simple reaction of a comment. Firstly I never expressed support for the KKB, I only expressed wanting to support the Papuan’s who are getting caught up in the middle. Whether it’s from the Indonesians or the KKB. Secondly I’m literally just complaining there’s no intelligent thought put into my comment. See it. Roll your eyes at it. Move on. Thirdly I get that I was the one that brought up history but what has Australia’s history with Aboriginals have to do with the Papuans. Should I not be upset at the poor treatment of others, can I not express disappointment in the fact that nothing’s being done? Is it hypocrisy that I complain about something that someone who I have no relation with did a long time ago?

As an Indonesian this is a massive eye openner, we never heard of any of the Atrocities that happened in papua. Though I am aware there is a conflict I had no Idea that it's civillian that's being bombed. At best we were told that theres a conflict in papua between us and some deranged incompetent terrorist organization. Indonesian believe that we are the victim of colonization. Never within any of our imagination that we will be the colonizer. Thankyou for covering this, I sincirely hope the needless massacre will end soon.

Spread the word to your friends and families. Only with the will of the ppl will your leaders change or stop their course of actions... I'm sure something can be worked out as long as ppl come to the negotiation table. But so much has already been done and it's hard to move forward without admittance of wrongdoing and reparations...

Apatah lagi mengguna sniper? There is a point when the force used no longer justifies the means or argument.. imagine if the nuclear bombs dropped in Japan during world war 2 was the go to military solution to any conflict any 2 countries might have...especially when used on countries with no nuclear capabilities themselves...

Good for you if you say this disgusting act to your people they would be disgusted by this but not for India, Israel, china, France, Russia, united kingdom and united states most of their people probably trying their best to justify their nation's invasion and oppression.

The tragic thing is this happened close to the border where some were able to escape to PNG and share their stories. It leaves one wondering what happens deeper into remote parts of West Papua

You've got to love the death merchant's practiced tone of not giving a single damn about what's happening. He speaks like the perfect lawyer, being more focused on not having his words used than even pretending than the invitation of human life matters to him If he even pretended, I'd have given him some slack. The utter emotional distance and that cute little "I was not aware of the nature of the interview" sent that careening off a cliff

He was probably called to that interview under false pretense based on how he responded to the questions. It's common in edgy journalism. I imagine they said they had questions about the company's products and instead accused him of being complicit in slaughter. No wonder he responded how he did.

Maybe not being complicit with the murder of civilians would have helped in the first place.

@@Dynahazzar3 Working for a multinational conglomerate that sold the IP of a bomb to the Indonesian government for them to produce and misuse doesn't make them complicit in murder. The IP has been bought and Thales was most likely not aware that the Indonesian government was bombing PNG civilians with them when they sold the IP to them. His division of Thales has quite literally nothing to do with the situation. It is straight up lazy and unethical journalism for Kristo to target someone so uninvolved to then take the footage to try and twist it into him being a greedy corporate man lying for his job. It's twisting the narrative to get a more interesting story, something nobody searching for a genuine take on the situation wants to watch. Constructed drama shouldn't be a part of journalism. Journalism is supposed to be *real*

Cr1tikal sent me. Thanks for covering this ❤ This kind of war and violence is always horrific and deplorable, but when used to try to exterminate isolated groups of people with natural ownership of their region, it’s absolutely disgusting. Equally disgusting how adjacent governments turn a blind eye

As a Solomon Born Canadian whos grandfather is from Bougainville I appreciate your journalism on that part of the world. It's hard to come by information as to whats actually goin on in Oceania. I really appreciate all of you involved in this. The world is getting smaller and as a consequence people who have nothing to do with any global conflict whatsoever are the ones who are getting hurt the most. So this is just a thought. Im sure many of you have had the same thought. I say the world get together and we sanction off a large piece of land and sea for all the militaries of the world to get together and kill themselves without harming innocent people who just want to live their lives.
