A&P-REACTS I am late, but Paradise Lost is criminally underrated and I am glad you reacted to it. Although I disagree, it's not a glass half empty situation to see how much time has passed - I didn't listen to Paradise Lost for quite a while, but I felt as excited as I was as a kid then when I discovered Shades of God and Icon or excitedly waited for the release Draconian Times or One Second. You are great for reacting to this great band.

One Second/Host were brilliant albums but people wanted them to be the European Metallica and reacted very badly to them. Of course, I can understand why, but they have continually forged their own path whatever you think of them.

Please react to the founders of the Female Fronted Symphonic Metal genre: Theatre of Tragedy - Lorelei: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m52ydHWMirCXaKM Their music was much more varied and original than most of the copycats and they evolved their style instead of doing the same thing on every album. Nightwish mentioned them as inspiration several times and Wikipedia says (search for Gothic Metal): Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy developed the "beauty and the beast" aesthetic of combining aggressive male vocals with clean female vocals, a contrast that had been adopted by groups before them, but not as a regular trademark; several bands have employed the technique since.

Paradise Lost opened me the door to the dark side. I went in 1996 to Rock am Ring when they were playing at the first evening together with Sepultura, Rancid, CIV, RATM and after that first day at the festival I wanted to get immediately leaving the ground cuz it couldn't get better. One of my most fave later released songs of those usually miserable feeling men from Yorkshire is "An eternity of lies" from THE PLAGUE WITHIN ... it was the album of the year when it was released for me. And I do love MEDUSA the latest piece as well. True Belief is in my memory connected to a lot of concerts. I love the Doom stuff ... the "not so good time" like you mentioned is probably the time when they did release the Best Depeche Mode album that was ever released. (-: I mean "Host" :)

Nice choice. I would prefer ˝Pity The Sadness˝ but this one is great too. Paradise Lost is one of England's big three of doom/gothic metal. Other two are My Dying Bride and Anathema. It would be great to see you react to other two. I recommend My dying bride - The Dreadful Hours (sinamorata) and Anathema - A Dying Wish.

I've listened to Paradise Lost since _Shades of God_ (1992), and back then also bought _Gothic_ (1991), but _Icon_ (1993) - *wow!* I've listened to _Icon_ at least *once a year* since, and it *never* gets dated. _Draconian Times_ (1995) was an *huge* disappointment. Comparing it to the *staggering* _Icon_ really shows what went wrong: _Draconian Times_ is toothless, *by-the-numbers* radio friendly. And then it only got *worse* with following albums. I sold _Draconian Times_ and abandoned hope for Paradise Lost... That is, until _Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us_ (2009) came out. Suddenly, Paradise Lost was back, and they've only gotten *deeper,* *heavier* and *fiercer* since, despite having reached the age of 30 years. *Long Live the Gothic Kings!*

Not goth, gothic. It's gothic metal, goth is something related to electronic music, if I remember correct (mostly dark electro and... synth pop... something, or gothic rock like Sisters of Mercy for example). Paradise Lost on their first ... I guess 2 albums, were considered black metal. They're one of the british doom metal trinity. Anathema, Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride. Also, I love that your kid has a Rolling Stones t-shirt. Maybe do one with them too? (haven't seen all your vids... yet).

they pretty much are but the term "doom death metal" came later. Also back then, anything with lyrics depicting black metal themes were considered black metal, even if they were heavy, or thrash ...or even death metal.
