So the new monster studio is set up in the new place. Excellent ! KZbin has only just shown me this video. I was curious to know , as some other video have been smaller set ups in a front room area with soft furnishings. Hopefully it meets the needs of ever expanding new equipment being released. So how many loops/'reels'/automated sequences do you have running for this track? And how do you keep it interesting and not sounding like it's all loops and repetitions? Is that what you use the Scene sequencer (with occurences and stuff) for? Your screen looks surprisingly empty 😉 Arranging tracks is still hard for me. I am good at making grooves and sample loops, but arrangements are difficult. But then I 'only' have Bitwig 16-track. Although Jarre, TD, and Klaus Schulze did everything on 8-track (and live played over the tracks) back in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Do you like Klaus Schulze's Moondawn, by the way? Schulze was my first ever live gig in my early highschool years. Must have been over 40 years ago 😮😃

What's on the screen isn't important, as the DAW (Studio One Pro) is only being used here for the live recording, and that's what the screen shows. There's no software sequencer used and no programmed arrangement, I'm just improvising the arrangement during the take. Everything you hear is continually running all the time, but I'm using CV faders hooked into the mixer to control what parts are audible, while playing the lead part on the Keystep. Love Shulze's music, especially Moondawn, Timewind and Kontinuum! Although this piece I did isn't a Berlin School track, this kind of mixing of continually playing parts lends itself very well to that kind of style, so that programmed arrangements aren't necessary and should actually be avoided. I think that might be the key to some of Shulze's earlier stuff, they really don't sound programmed but more improvised.

Nowadays it's hard to remeber the classic way of making musik only using some hardware parts - even the sampling was done with some very cool and expensive HW. Sometimes I miss the old days of studio work - but sometimes not..... :-))

Your videos are a vibe and a half, man. Love listening and the visual appeal your videos have as well is awesome. I’ve been wanting to start a hardware setup and am split between the Deluge OR Octatrack Mk2 + Rev2 and Piano (or something similar). What would you suggest for a beginner hardware setup? My main desire is just to not have to be tied to a computer screen to do music and still come up with pretty full-fledge compositions then bring them into a DAW later.

Thanks! Yes, I often use Studio One Pro for mixing, arranging, and certainly mastering. Bitwig is still my go to mostly for producing.

Big fan but had to stop listening because your kick was ducking the pads insufferably. Not pleasant with headphones. There's no need to sidechain it.

Whether or not it needed the sidechain is debateable, I didn't like it without the sidechaining, the kick needed space and due to the polymetric percussion layers, I felt it also needed the ducking to help pin the rhythm. These things will always be subjective for the listener though. I could have made it a little less pronounced on the depth of the ducking, but these modular tracks are done and recorded in one take with no practice, I either get it right or a I don't. After that, all the cables get pulled and there's no second attempts. I like this way of working with the modular, but it means very raw tracks without the best production possible and being okay with the choices I made during the performance. Can't get it right for everyone, unfortunately.
