In relation to this film, I think it's important to realise/understand, or at least have a fairly decent grasp of history. As the 'Grave/Pit' storyline is from the 'Guerra Civil Española ' ( The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 ) This plot point ( driven home with a sledgehammer ) of the film... is that Spaniards are all Spaniards at heart, and should come together, no matter the drama that divides them - or the anger they've feel towards each other. It's very much 'wedged' unevenly into the story... countering as it does, the absurd drama of the main body of the film. But that's what it means to be Almodovar, deeply idiosyncratic and Spanish.

I didn’t love it either. You said jumbled in your intro and that’s the perfect way to describe it. It felt like 2 different stories intersecting to try and portray a whole world of themes. I expected a lot more. I did a long review on Letterboxd

I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt this. The ending left me so confused. It felt like he was trying to connect two storys that only vaguely related themeatically. They barley mentioned the archeology aspect throughout the whole film and yet ended on that note. In fact it was revered with such high importunateness that they included a quote at the end about the how history can’t be erased . It confused me I thought “wait, I didn’t just watch a film about the history of Spain I watched a movie that’s as cemeteries around the idea of motherhood”. It just felt like too lost that didn’t connect at all. *also I really hated the feminist shirt they put on here. This could of defiantly said something about single motherhood and female empowerment but having the character just straight up were a feminist shirt feels so lazy. Multiple times throughout the story they pointed out things way to directly through words instead of expressing it through physicality or careful undertones. Overall, did NOT need to be two hours long, very messy, confusing.
