Well Peeps! Sweet Honey is finally back home with her Dad, and we’ve got another MASSIVE transformation under our belts.
If you can remember back, Honey came to us extremely paranoid, intensely fearful, highly reactive dog - one of the more intense fear cases we’ve seen to date! Her behavior had finally peaked to attacking other dogs on sight, without provocation, an all out refusal to be walked, and extreme reaction to anything loud or unfamiliar.
Fear-based reactivity had Honey over-protecting his new home, and lunging and growling at any dog that came too close. Trips outside of the house were now becoming a serious hassle, so Honey’s Dad reached out for help with his rescue. Honey also suffered from a SEVERE lack of structure & accountability which burdened her with the task of controlling her new world - something she is just not capable of doing alone.
Ironically, Honey’s owner was perplexed as to the reason why she was acting out. I mean, Honey literally hit the jackpot being rescued off the streets of the Bahamas, then to be showered with all the love and freedom anyone could ever wish for. Her owner started seeing a progressive worsening in her overall state of mind, no matter how much they were trying to soothe or comfort her. The instability just kept getting worse.
So her Dad reached out for help! And that we did;)
Once Honey learned that growling, lunging, and exploding warranted correction, and irrational panic was redirected into having a job, all of that irrational nonsense finally stopped! Now Honey will probably NEVER truly enjoy going out in public. But when it is a necessity, she has to be able to be walked. And now she is fully capable!
What an amazing gift this big girl has been given. She and her Dad are now equipped with the knowledge needed to provide the structure and routine Honey requires to be her most balanced, relaxed self. Honey just needed to know that her owner IS fully capable of being the rock she needs to feel safe. The delicate dance between being tender, yet tough when necessary, is the key to finding balance and harmony for this nervy girl. Continued exposure will be the key to all of this stuff staying fresh and familiar!
