I think maybe we might be judging him a little too harshly. There’s in a scene in the movie that really stuck out to me. It’s when Sandra is talking to Norman and when he says, “He’s my dad. He shouldn’t be afraid of me.” And she replies, “He’s not afraid of you, he’s afraid for you.” So many of us automatically assume that if a parent doesn’t accept their child being different immediately, it’s because the parent is just being cruel and unfair and they’re just embarrassed and ashamed of their child. But does it ever occur to them that maybe parents act that way not because they have a problem with their child being different but they know the world will. Let’s be honest here, we all know that people will always react negatively to someone who’s different, they’ll bully them or worse. And parents don’t want that for their kids. Normally a parent’s first instinct is to do whatever it takes to keep their child safe, and that can lead to said parent making mistakes. But that doesn’t mean they don’t love their child. Parents like Perry just don’t want their child to spend their whole getting ridiculed and harassed.
