Not sure if the theming is lost, but for me, I tend to look at these as failure to mature. Parappa, in the eyes of these adults, is still just a kid. Parappa says to himself before every trial that he’s gotta believe, eventually facing off against Colonel Noodle, who’s very confident in his noodlisation conquest that he openly used Parappa’s three words, “I gotta believe!” This is Parappa’s true test of maturity, being able to take down a threat to Parappa Town not only through funky beats, rap, friendship, and dumb luck, but most of all, confidence. Learning from all his teachers throughout the game led to the test that was the Food Court and that would affirm him in his quest of maturity. When it comes to these failures, you’ve got a kid who wants to be a big shot but not measuring up, so in my opinion, the teachers being as pissed as they are for Parappa failing is very much validated. “What is with this noodle thing?” “What a kid!” “You’re the worst!” “Take that stupid hat off!” Granted it’s a video game, where Parappa is somehow a god being able to master burger flipping, romantic karate, military training, hair cutting, and video games, but the overall theming of maturing is still ever present in this game. Each chapter essentially has a “bad ending” after the rap battles. TLDR, kid thinks he’s a big shot, can’t keep up, and adults are, in my eyes, justifiably disappointed.
