If they were Egyptian, the two midwives were the first recorded "righteous among the nations." During WW2, a peasant family in southern France hid two Jewish boys in a barn under straw for many months. Years later, one of them, now grown up and living in America, came back to visit the people who had saved him and his brother. Asked why the now elderly woman and her husband had risked their lives to hide them, she said simply: "Because it is wrong to kill people." That is the moral imperative we all need to hold by.
