I didn’t know former Capcom employees worked on Parasite Eve 2. That explains why Aya looks like Jill Valentine from Resident Evil 3, as well her bonding with the 2nd Eve which mirrors Claire Redfield and Sherry Birkin. Also Kyle being basically a mix of Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy. Most people won’t notice but in Resident Evil Dead Aim, Kyle gets somewhat parodied with protagonist Bruce Mcgivern. Similar outfits and same one liners specially with Bruce flirting with Fong Ling.

Square-Enix has really been a mixed bag for me. Final Fantasy XV was fun, but not as good as I hoped. I enjoyed the gameplay of Kingdom Hearts 3, but found the story lacking. FFVIIR I didn't care for when I found out it was only a third of the original game and that they basically padded it out to make it run longer. Some of their other recent games like Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default I really like, and I'm looking forward to the Fire Emblem FF Tactics-like game they're making. But Square just doesn't pump out instant classics like they used to. FFVII, VIII, IX, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Chrono Cross, and so many other more all on the PS1 and they are all just masterpieces in their own right.

Solid video - I remember buying this game new after seeing commercials for it; I was 15 at the time so thankfully they were more lax in regards to selling M rated games to minors.. On the Resident Evil comparison note, a lot of people consider Resident Evil and Silent Hill to be the opposite sides of a coin when it comes to horror-themed games -- personally, I think that it's a triangle (like if a 3-sided coin were possible) with Resident Evil, Silent Hill & Parasite Eve on the three end-points. After all, one is loud, aggressive with its scares and adheres to a believable physical reality (Resident Evil), one is metaphorical, abstract and adheres only to its own nebulous physical reality (Silent Hill), and one is a fusion of serious sci-fi and fantasy, methodical in its storytelling and horror mostly just in terms of its themes and audio-visual design (Parasite Eve).

I think PE2 holds up quite well, it has so many QOL small things that are surprising for its era. For example the menuing is really streamlined. There's no weird delay, the UI is easily understood, no clutter. The interaction between the powers and gun play is cool, and the music, the settings, the enemy design and their sounds are really good. That said I pretty much grew up with tank controls.
@benvanasdale62732 жыл бұрын
First, I think you deserve WAY more subs than you have. Not only this vid, but every one I've watched so far of yours has been top notch. I'm glad you loved PE as much as I did back in the day. Beautiful game with a beautiful soundtrack. I do recommend giving PE2 another shot. The atmosphere is just as isolating, I think it can be downright unsettling at times. I also think it's more replayable than the first (although ng+ was awesome, 2 has a better implementation imo). There are multiple endings based on certain routes and choices you make, and the PE attacks are much more fleshed out. The armor and weapon customization is different, but you can still make yourself really OP by doing the right things. It's really a blast. I promise lol
@kwizzeh3 жыл бұрын
It's interesting looking back, one can't help but feel that it was probably PE1 that showed Square that they can make their traditional battle system into something more action oriented/focused. Now here we are 23 years later and that's basically what the Final Fantasy battle system has evolved into lol. Sadly, the rumor over the years since the end of PE2 is whether Hideaki Sena will allow the usage of the name and original concepts from the novel & first two games to be ever used again by Square. Since the rumor is he disliked how sexualized Aya was, and had become in PE2. Oh, he also co-owns the name so Square has to go through not only him, but the novel's publisher Kadokawa too. To my understanding, Square owns the characters to the video game series and can freely do whatever they want with them as long as it doesn't directly reference any of the ideas from the original novel, and by extension, the first two games. (Mitochondria! /me takes a shot of alcohol) Also two fun facts, author Hideaki Sena is Ph.D. Pharmacology. Dude ended up graduating and does talks on microbiology and genre fiction. The character Kunihiko Maeda bares his likeness but no one knows for sure if it was intentional lol
@TheGoldenBolt3 жыл бұрын
The first part is something I tried to dance a little bit around when talking about PE as that "cinematic RPG" - its impact on later Square games is crystal clear. That's part of what makes it so fascinating to me, that perhaps one of the studio's most internally influential projects is one they can't exactly talk about (or rather, make) anymore. That's the most "90s game" thing imaginable!

One thing about New Game + is that you keep the weapons you rename but if you actually don't rename them, they're gone and you're stuck with the weak pistol again and you need to find and customize your guns back. When i first plaed the game i thought the Rename mechanic was just a bonus thing because the game doesn't tell you that, so i didn't rename my guns because i'm bad at names and when i started New Game + i was screwed, though, the game difficulty is so well balanced that you really didn't need your old weapon...unless you wanted to do the new randomized dungeon, i had to recollect 200 scraps just to Get and customize the gun i was using and let me tell you: you really start hating Aya running speed when exploring that dungeoun because everytime you need to go back to restock and modify your weapon, you need to navigate all the dungeon backwards and try to find the stairs and then the elevator that will take you to the exit, all while fighting countless random battles as you get lost because, of course, the floors are randomly generated. It was a nightmare . Overall i really liked the game now, when i was younger i hated it because i was used to PE2 since in Europe the first game was never released (Squaresoft LOVED doing that) and i hated how slow Aya was, and how weird the weapon system was so i never really beat it until a friend of mine who lives in America gifted me a copy when i told him i was intrested in giving this game an other chance, i'm glad i did it but in my eyes i will always prefer the 2nd game even if PE1 is still a fantastic game...not the 3rd birthday tho, that game is beyond stupid and ridicolous and i never touched it since release

Parasite Eve 2 takes everything that's good with PS1-era resident evil and refines it into the ultimate narrative/atmospheric experience it's not as ""scary"" as resi, it's not a survival horror like resi (since it WANTS you to hunt enemies) but it's FUN, it IS scary, and aya's character is bloody great. Thank you for the retrospective on this gem of a game. I played this game for the first time shortly after it was just released and I went into it blind. I had never heard about it before I played it, and the opening cinematic and music blew me away at the time. I played it start to finish several times and kept levelling up that way and eventually even beat the Chrysler Building boss. At the time I wasn't used to games that were so deeply story based. To say this game is story based is an understatement. Even now I have the music from the soundtrack playing in the background while playing Warframe missions. Btw, I'm newly subscribed to your channel so I wouldn't know but have you played the PS2 game entitled "Primal?" It features the characters Jen and Scree. The mechanics of the gameplay were very badly designed but I also played that game several times start to finish only because I loved the story so much. The friendship that developed between the two main characters made all the tedium of getting through the levels totally worth it. Anyway, thanks again for this retrospective.

if you like RPG aspects/mechanics PE1 is one of the best RPGs of all time, unique combat system and RPG aspects/mechanics, along with a great story/plot, and while a much shorter RPG (can be speed run in 3 hrs) (having no tons of "side quest areas" and no long drawn out epic world saving story/plot and game progression), it's "short and to the point", which is really wonderful, and there's almost no grinding, the game is very balanced, in that you will always end up at clvl 33, by the end of the game for the last PE power, which helps a lot with the final bosses, along with replay ability (power gaming ability and/or trying different weapons and etc customizations, and etc play styles, and/or challenges) and a special dungeon too. Also, it has great characters, and is set back in the "good ol' days", where a cop can slug the brains out of a harassing reporter, laughs, and also has a sexy powerful independent bad'ss stoic/silent female lead, though we get to know her through her actions, who shoulder checks her wussy "date", whom she was only going out with as her fellow cops had set her up with, due to her being such a workaholic, thinking she needed some fun/recreation and relaxation from her job as a cop (which she has only been for a few months/weeks), and pulls out a gun from her thigh strap holder, while in her fancy date dress and high heels, to take on a "mutant" woman, who just burnt everyone up with spontaneous combustion... Oh, and unlike RE, this is based on, and uses, actual science (biology) too (though obviously it exaggerates some stuff and/or goes into sci-fi with some stuff), if you into that nerdy type of stuff, laughs since we got a "batman vs superman" movie.... we need a movie of a 3-way battle between: Aya Brea (PE) vs Alice/Jill (RE) vs Selene (Underworld) to determine whom is the most sexy OP bad'ss woman, lol -------- if you don't like RPGs, and you like RE type of game play, then you'll like PE2 much more, as I think it still has a good story/plot (I've never played it myself, I'm not interested in it), though it completely diverges from PE1

Following the Square-Enix's trend of remastering classics of their era, I could easily see the company venturing into Parasite Eve as the next project because, due to the story, setting and mechanics, it is highly accessible and can be easily delved into especially for fresh new players while remaining one of the kind experience. It's a crime it never got the official European release because I can easily see it being successful in that region. It's not as highly Japanese orientated as other squaresoft counterparts, it takes place in New York during Christmas and the RPG mechanics are easy to pick up and play especially for people who aren't really deep into RPG's and it's about dozens of hours long. It could have been a solid Holiday release in Europe and a proper replacement to fill up the gap until FFVIII comes along since no major FF game was set for that year. It might have been a sleeper hit in Europe. Releasing the sequel without the first game defeats the whole purpose. I would have preferred the remaster route rather than a remake because, being aware of Square-Enix's record, they'd probably add some needless story filler to fill up the gaps for an already perfect story as it is and they'd probably end up adding some arbitrary sidequest that add nothing to the plot just to stretch out the runtime. They can just enhance the visuals, speed up the run cycle and give the mechanics a proper polish and be done with it.

Sqeenix lost the licensing agreement (because PE2 displeased Sena-san) and had to give Aya an entirely different powerset (think Assassin's Creed), absolutely zero mention of mitochondria, and they absolutely twist/betray the established personalities of several characters. But, don't take my word for it, see for yourself...the reaction should be interesting.

Jumping in for another comment. I’ve watched this video a couple times now. Please do a Legend of Mana retrospective. It’s my all time favorite game and I would love to see someone of your talents review it. Please.

Played 3rd birthday first and had fun. Played PE1 after and adored it then played PE2. Hated the tank controls but stuck with it and turned into my fav PE game. After experiencing them in that order I know for a fact I would have hated 3rd birthday if i played it last. Does a complete disservice to the series story-wise. Still enjoyed it but doesnt hold a candle to the charm of the first two.

I’ve got a massively underrated and incredible game (and experience) for you to do next: Xenoblade Chronicles X. The game is one of the most finely crafted open world games ever made, with an addicting combat system and playstyle customization....yet it’s not only the black sheep of the Xenoblade series, it’s almost never discussed.

As someone who not only played 3rd Birthday and actually really liked it as well as the previous two games I can still absolutely understand why others wouldn't like it. The plot really is nonsensical especially compared to the other two games....until you get to the end and it actually ties everything together extremely well (imo). That being said, having to play through the entire game for that "Aha!" moment, no matter how good, is rather egregious. Nonetheless, I still want remakes/remasters of all three games because story aside I found the mechanics and gameplay in each to be unique and fun, that haven't been recreated in that fashion in any other game to date that I'm aware of.

PE1 and 2 are among my favourite ps1 games..P E, R.E, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill, MGS.. i didn't play FF7 until i found ffx on ps2 although i always remember gawking at box art at the rental store, PE was the closest thing to an RPG i had experienced until then.

Even if we can't get the exact Parasite Eve franchise itself back, I'd love to see a soft reimagining/modernization of the gameplay approach and that horror-RPG hybrid concept. It probably wouldn't work nearly as well today with a modern market, but you never know!

Fun fact. mitochondria were a 'proto' cell organism. It has rna, a simpler version of dna. When the first cells came into being, they formed a symbiotic relationship.

I can't bring myself to watch too much more of this since I haven't finished the game yet and now that I got a proper emulation going I want to hopefully see it through to the end this time, but I definitely agree this game was a banger. Especially the music. So many of those tracks are still in my head decades since I first heard them. I kinda wish more games tried this combat style too. It isn't the objective best - the perspective can work against you at times despite the devs' best efforts - but I would have loved to see it played around with more. Vagrant Story used a very similar style of combat, but other mechanics made it all feel a bit too bloated for a game that was otherwise so short.

Completely agree Parasite Eve totally deserve spot in RPG History. If we ever do get a remake of it by some miracle we have to ask ourselves with today's gamers and today's graphics would it even hold a candle to the original? What would they change? Because they always do they even changed FF7 ever so slightly. Just Questions. Well now I am off to watch your Legend of Dragoon restrospective because that is my all time favorite RPG hands down.

My experience with this series is pretty limited unfortunately. I played The 3rd Birthday around the time it came out and that was my entry point into these series. So obviously I was pretty confused, especially when I looked into the previous two games that had absolutely nothing to do with the 3rd game. (Not even sharing the same title. Lol) I finished the 3rd Birthday twice, because the gameplay was fun, and I did ironically enjoy the story. As much of a trainwreck and nonsense it was. I bought PE1 on PSN and played about halfway through. I never finished it sadly, but what I did play I remember enjoying. Definitely need to play it again one day.

Did you know the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell?
@redmoonbloodmoon31613 жыл бұрын
and going beyond "high school biology class of the 'powerhouse of the cell' and its ATP/ADP processes"... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_DNA mitochondria is pretty much the basis of all genetics/ancestry stuff (including the human genome project), as we can use the female lineage of their mitochondria as " genetic markers", enabling all the genetics/ancestry stuff we do and know/learned about with our selves/species including about how we traced modern humanity (homo sapiens sapiens: wise wise man) to women in south africa, as the game/klamp gives the science-history lesson of it too, which has also been proven with anthropology as well... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory humanity (homo sapiens: wise man) had colonized the entire earth, but then super volcano mt toba erupted ~75,000 years ago, and along with the ensuing ice age, wiped out all of early humanity, except for humans in south africa (the only place not touched by the ice age). These few surviving humans would re-populate the earth, and that's why all current (modern) humans (homo sapiens sapiens) of today have such similar DNA, as we all came from this last single surviving group of humanity (homo sapiens) in south africa ("last/final" humanity, homo sapiens: wise man, arose in east africa ~300,000 years ago, in the great rift valley, in mostly what is now the country of ethiopia, and had then spread/populated across the world, but our modern humanity came from a last single surviving group of humanity, homo sapiens: wise man, in south africa as it was the only place untouched by the ice age after the mt toba eruption 75,000 years ago)

the 3rd game is a bit complicated but long story short tho you know this series is base on a novel story right? which means that'll requires copyright and they just so happen that doesnt have copyright during 3rd's developement so actually that is definitely not a official pe3
