I may be confused young brother but those bags of corn and peas look like frozen. I have only parched dried corn and peas. dryed blue corn and split peas are really nice and without oil or fat keep a long time too. good stuff! be safe... Ted

13:30 This might be the Iron Wood Tree (Carpinus caroliniana),also know as the Muscle Tree because of its gray sinewy looking trunk. It belongs to the birch family and the wood was used for tool handles, longbows and canes because of its' great strength. Other common names are Blue Beech and American Hornbeam.

I really enjoyed the fire lesson I am going to try it out. How long will it last in the bags non refrigerated?
@marenkuether-ulberg33115 жыл бұрын
I think that it lasts longer dry than refrigerated -- keeps away moisture but you still have to avoid vermin. Shrug...

Looks cold, but was actually pretty warm today.....high 30's maybe. Not sure exactly how long they will last but should be a while, specially with the breathable muslin sacks to keep any moisture from gathering. I dont mind powdered milk....would never really buy it. I dont need anything to mix with the hot choc really. Not a bad idea for tea tho....might look into that one! Thanks man
@fieldagent5912 жыл бұрын
well done, I was wondering how in the hell you were able to grab those cast iron handles on the fire, without gloves, then I noticed these skillets have the wire handles and plastic handles built on. They look a lot lighter than full cast iron also.......great job!

They used to just eat it like it is, couple hand fulls a day would keep them going. It swells up in your stomach. You need to drink lots of water as it will dehydrate you as well Thanks bro

Looks good bro, few things of note the cast iron took longer but it would have made better because the heat is more even. As you noted the ones you did not use oil on parch faster of course the point is basically dehydrating them, but if you use a little oil and some seasonings salt, pepper, garlic, what ever you like it will take a little longer to dry out, but make for much better tasting snacks.

Could you use dry split peas as well ?
@marenkuether-ulberg33115 жыл бұрын
Or whole dried peas? Admittedly it seems less critical for edibility than dried parched corn. The peas & corn together are a good whole protein. However, the ancient/contemporary process of nixtamalization (basically boiling your corn w/ lime (calcium hydroxide) or wood ash, then let to steep over night, pour off the lime water and rinse well. This releases your corn of toxins and hard hulls; and allows the maize to soften and swell, & make available Vit. B3 (niacin, which the lack of sickened Europe), +35% proteins, 45% calories, and 50% calcium. I'm going to experiment w/ whole dried peas this weekend, but I have my doubts.

Potched peas and potched corn ... check ! I was thinking that a British Forces MILLBANK (water pre-filter) BAG would make a very nice pouch for the ground corn and/or peas. ... Could clamp the top of the bag between two sticks and roll it down ... tie the ends of the sticks together and, if need be, attach a length of cordage as a messenger strap.
@marenkuether-ulberg33115 жыл бұрын
Just a maybe grousy point: unless you're going to use the peas (or corn) rightaway, won't storing partially pounded peas just subject them to spoilage very soon?
@sargefaria12 жыл бұрын
Too easy buddy! Thanks for your time to watch my videos ; )
@sargefaria12 жыл бұрын
cool man. No, this was "cut corn"...but sweet will work also, prolly better actually. Thats why i went with sweet peas lol. Give it a shot man
