"At least three parents turned their children in to the Los Angeles Police Department for their involvement in multiple flash mob robberies at 7-Eleven stores across the city this summer, according to officials. The parents spotted their children in surveillance footage released by the LAPD, as many of those involved in the robberies did not attempt to conceal their faces as they grabbed bags of chips and candy.
From July 12 to Sept. 20, kids on bicycles swarmed 7-Eleven stores in groups of 20 to 40. The LAPD responded to 14 reports of flash mobs primarily made up of teenagers wearing hoodies over their heads or simply smiling as they grabbed armfuls of items off the shelves. Some wore masks or T-shirts pulled over their faces, according to still images taken from the surveillance footage inside the stores."

@@tylerharris4392 I think what you’re suggesting is an excuse - since it completely negates the fact that kids have autonomy, personality, temperament, values, and form relationships with other kids that also inform attitudes and behavior. As kids grow older, they will become more psychologically independent, and they will seek conformity in their social groups, even if it may push the parents’ boundaries. This is part of growing up. As a parent, you need to take responsibility to teach the child accountability. But the idea that a child’s behavior is always a reflection of the parents’ adequacy in raising the kid is simply not true.

@@Kenneth181Wrong. One of parent’s many roles is to teach their kid right from wrong. Sometimes that involves taking responsibility for their actions. This is nothing new. Watch a show from the 50s-60s when the dad would march his kid to the neighbors house so they could admit they broke the window with their baseball (yes kids used to go outside and play). Covering for your kid only cements that there are no consequences for bad behavior.

@@steveguillory7568 Yeah you’re supposed to teach your kid right and wrong but you don’t turn them over to the law willing cause you don’t know what they might try to do. Look up this kid Allen bullock from Baltimore. He rioted in Baltimore during whole Freddie gray and he damaged a police car. His parents turned him in and BPD tried to fuck him over to the fullest. They put a bail on him higher than the cops that killed Freddie gray. Had it not been for the press coverage they would have tried charge that kid with a felony and make him do time with harden dangerous crimes. Jails and prisons are not secure safe places. We had multiple flash mobs at my work. Four kids out of the mob attacked me in December. I got a hit on two of them but what can you really do when you get ambushed by four from behind? I consider myself lucky to have escaped with only a black eye. These kids are fully aware that they will face zero consequences for any of these actions because of their age. Cops sure don't do much. In my experience each flash mob I encountered was entirely black kids and I wouldn't want to get on video handling these kids either if I was a Police Officer. It's a tough job to get and an easy job to lose and you need to pick and choose your battles. I am so happy to hear that some parents have the integrity to turn in their kids. I am sure it was a difficult choice but it will be better for the kids in the long run I believe. I hope the kids learn from it and act better in the future.

He would have definitely given me a good spanking. Even now, at my "advanced" age, he would probably do the same - but he would never turn me over to the cops just for a (Of course not violent one) flash mob theft! Of course, I don't want to downplay what those iPad kids did. If there is violence, you should call the cops for your little monsters.

@@3L_B4R7O I would respect either method as long as it is effective. Look, the Police know how to deal with kids. They won't be harshly treated. It's best to think of what they'd do as a "Scared straight" program; They'll process them, charge them and so on but it's not like the kid is doing any real time and being a juvenile their records will be sealed anyways. But maybe, just maybe the kid will learn about consequences of his/her actions.

The problem in America is with our prisons, and with what happens to people after they get out of prison. Prisons don't need to be hellholes, and we need to stop destroying people's lives after they've been to prison. Prisons need to be a place for rehabilitation. People should be coming out of prison with skills that they can use to go get a legitimate job and make an honest living. If you release someone from prison after keeping them out of society for a decade and they don't have any skills to make a living, and then you say they have to report their status as a felon to any job they apply for, obviously a lot of those people are going to be forced into a life of crime to support themselves, because you didn't give them any options for making an honest living.

I have many things to say about this because my family has been affected by these crimes. First, good job to the parents. We have a small business in one of these cities where crime has gone up steadily over the last four years. My family members have been held up at gunpoint by teens out running crimes. Customers belongings have been stolen. And there are some people in the neighborhood that argue that we should not call the cops because it will lead down the wrong path for these teens. But I believe that if you let a behavior continue, it will most likely get worse. As someone who has made a “dumb” choice as a teenager, getting caught and paying the consequences like community service changed my course for the better. Second, prop 47 is a problem. I consider myself a victim because of this law. My ID was stolen from my mailbox and criminals use it as their identity when they commit crimes. When they steal under $950 they have been given citations to go to court but never show up. I had a warrant out for my arrest, had to hire an attorney and go to court to prove it was not actually me who did these crimes. If it weren’t for Prop 47, the criminal would have been booked and someone would have realized the person was actually impersonating me. A quick fingerprint would have proved it wasn’t me. We need to make some changes in CA.

… so like, how things have always been? Every generation has parents who shouldn’t have been parents… because many had no choice after finding out they were pregnant. I think it goes way deeper then just parents aren’t disciplining their kids. theres a whole laundry list of issues that cause this. Whats happening isnt okay what so ever, but theres other issues at play here. Unbridled Social media/ internet access to very young children (speaking as a late 90s early20s kid) lack of education because of underpaid/not enough teachers, lack of genuine social interaction (back to social media and social outlets), lack of good mental health attention (therapy is expensive and there aren’t enough genuinely good therapists), not enough safe and affordable housing, not enough support for new parents, ect, list goes on 😓

No, it's not anti-left wing to be against crime. The issue is that Ana SPECIFICALLY hyper focuses on it, and it's getting pretty suss at this point that she's obviously courting the right wing and getting ready to grift TF out of them. Again, it's not anti-left wing to be against crime, but it is ABSOLUTELY suspicious behaviour for someone on the left to be hyper-fixating on specific crimes when the overall crime trend has gone dramatically downwards.

The DOJ’s survey from the Bureau of Justice statistics contradicts the "dramatically" claim. Also, right wingers aren't the only ones worried about crime, there are a lot of Americans who aren't politically active who are concerned as well.

Discipline starts at home, always. If your kids are doing this, they dont understand consequences. Thry think they can get away with it because they're minors and the crime is barely a misdemeanor. If that was my kid, you'd better believe that if you're gonna act like a criminal outside, you're gonna be treated like one at home. Criminals get basic food and clothes, but not much else.

I don’t know if you have the same saying as we do in Britain Bad association, spoils, useful habits.
