Plymouth police are sending a strong message to a so-called "middle school bicycle gang" that consequences are coming if they keep up with their antics. WBZ-TV's Tiffany Chan reports.

A $20 ticket is not a deterrent. Impounding their bikes and a criminal mischief charge is a better idea. Kicking a car is destruction of property. Having to hire an attorney for your child and time off work for court dates make more of an impact on their parents. And getting them to community service every week adds even more headache.

I am a white, conservative male who is tired of watching numerous news story after news story about kids committing adult crime, seemingly en masse. But this story does not sound like an out of control crime problem. Should the city enforce dangerous riding. Yes. But it seems like the city CAN work with the kids and their parents and even offer a solution like how cities build skate parks. They can have a place for these kids to show off AND stay out of the city doing it. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to have all the local kids educated in earlier grades how to ride responsibly when and if they do ride into commercial areas with slow traffic traveling on 2 lane roads with stores on both sides. Again, enforce the laws about dangerous riding there but promote a solution where the kids can do stunts in other areas. Heck, that older gentleman seems to enjoy watching them, and I am sure there are others. The way he described his interactions with the kids does not sound like these are very 'bad' kids, but rather nice kids.

I formerly lived in Plymouth MA. I can say that the waterfront is no place for juvenile bicyclists. If they can't get to the bike paths in Myles Standish State Forest, and that is quite a hike from Plymouth Center, then most of the town is really bike unfriendly.

Plymouth was my biking heaven back in the 70's. We spent entire days biking all around town from dawn till dusk. There was always a fountain to get some change from for a soda or id go work the spring behind Mayflower Theater. The car dealership would close the lot on weekends so people couldn't drive back to fill jugs so i on my bike would shuttle jugs between the gate and spring for tips then go to Friendly's across the street for a burger and a sundae. Bet i wasnt 7 or 8 at the time. Plymouth was nice before Algonquin Village which is now Heights I guess. What a crime filled dump that turned into and everyone saw it coming.

$20.00 is a joke ... bring those fines up to $500 each time and confiscate the bikes for good. If they do it again the fine/s go up to $750 and the kid gets a week in county lock up. Third time the fine go's to $1,500 and the kid and parent go to county lock up for a month ( with a record ).

On the other side of the coin, I ride bike paths often and it's typically the usual suspects exaggerating the relative risk or acting deeply offended: Old ladies. You pass at a whopping 15 mph and they scowl / jump out of the way as if you're an ICBM. There's a reason the term "Karen" has become so popular. It's as though decades of walking while female has trained them that the world revolves around them. Older men for the most part stay to the side and hear / see other trail users sooner. Could simply be evolution. If you use your bell there's a 50% chance they'll move right into your path (!) Basic European etiquette / protocol would go a long way here. Americans like to aggressively pursue their perceived personal freedom. Meaning, "I'll walk wherever I please because I'm at the top of the hierarchy". Strategically coordinating with other users seems to literally be a very foreign concept. This said - kids (young men in particular) will *always* find a way to provoke. Also a very evolutionarily driven trait.

This is the result of the GOP cutting education spending from 12% to 3%. No afterschool programs except maybe sports. Parents are still at work. What do you expect the kids to do. Hide in their houses so you do not have to see or hear them? Are we not supposed to be encouraging them to get out and exercise? How easy would it be to start a few programs at your schools to engage them there? Bikes are the problem, then setup bike races and other related activities. Put that into a positive instead of criminalizing kids being kids.
