c‘est l‘éternelle discussion des improvisations de Jean Guillou encadrant la messe. L‘impro ici enregistrée est une oeuvre monumentale exceptionnelle. Guillou, athéiste pour autant que je sache a toujours considéré qu‘il se devait, de l‘art pour l‘art, de produire chaque fois deux oeuvres d‘art . Et ce fut le cas. L‘art en soi est déjà „ soli Deo gratia“, peu importe que l‘organiste y voit ou non un lien avec la liturgie voire la foi. Personnellement je préfère cela à une banale impro sur le chant d‘entrée. D‘ailleurs Guillou a fait de telles impros aussi. Je me rappelle, deux ou trois ans après l‘inauguration de l‘orgue, un dimanche de Pentecôte, une improvisation à couper le souffle sur le Alleluia de Haendel qui ma laissé bouche bée.Et donnait la chaire de poule. D‘ailleurs l‘oeuvre d‘orgue écrite de Guillou reçoit de plus en plus de reconnaissance. On voit de plus en plus apparaître dans les orogrammes de récitals ses Sagas, sa Toccata etc. Olivier Latry notamment les met régulièrenent à ses programmes. Latry dont le style d‘improvisation a beaucoup changé au fil du temps, joue actuellement dans nombre de ses concerts la version syncrétique ( versions piano et orgue) écrite par Guillou du B.A.C.H. de Liszt . Mais il est connu que nul n‘est prophète en son pays. .

Inspiration from Durufle; it is the riffs of triplet ,quadriplet nots left to echo in the building. The nature of a romantic organ is the sensitivity to the sheer volume and power.

As an "Entree" to the Mass, how does this encourage worship amongst the faithful?

🤣 LMAO Almost all contemporary french improvisations are like this. They grew from roots of Widor, Dupre, Cochreau style and went wild a little. I somewhat agree with you. As Entree, I would imagine something maestoso with gradual buildup and something like a marching beat. This brings to my mind goblins tinkering in their underground lair. Btw, I don't criticize Jean Guillou, I highly respect him.

It's an acquired taste. I'm well acquainted to this style of playing, so I see the profound side of it. But I can see how to people who aren't familiar with this language how it would be off-putting. It used to be to me. I've grown to appreciate it.

If you would learn to focus on the MUSIC your mind might not feel compelled to make such a critique. To answer your question: Who cares? It's like those who have to comment on the way an organist moves or how they dress. Who cares?

@@sathya999 I do listen to the music, however after over 50 years playing for services I had to be aware of the limitations of the congregation. In the early1970s I played the Entre of Messiaen's Pentecost at the end of the Whit Sunday service and got a roasting from several of the congregation. I heard Cochereau play a recital in 1968 at St Eustache - quite memorable, including the improvisation.

God should suffice, but yes a bit more transcendent beauty certainly lifts one soul higher, and aims his eyes to the higher things. Guillou is a bit too experimental for me to call much of his stuff "transcendent beauty"
