Over 50 years in cycling and Lake is the answer. I use the Lake custom carbon insole and I recommend them. My feet are only a D width (normal) but wide lakes are the answer. My problem is that my feet swell, in tighter shoes it makes my 5th metatarsal go numb and become very painful. My wide lakes with dual boas work for me. Top boa is slightly tight, the lower boa is loose. This works for me.

i got a discount offer for cx403 and 242, both for just $200 each, brand new in my size, just bums me out that 403's wide last (in 42w) is 103.8mm wide and my feet is 104.2 BEFORE working out on my thinnest sock. yes i got a huge discount and maybe the leather will break in but $200 is still a huge risk for me so I bought 242. also I like the fact that 242 is more ventilated and got a bigger room for error on non-optimized cleat position because of the extra volume and foot shape versatility. i think it's paying off, I also like the fact that I don't need to think too much about sock thickness when wearing 242s. the bling factor of 403 for such a huge discount is a gut punch but ill take comfort and versatility over bling/aesthetics every day. tho i was contemplating when you said they're comfy even after so many kms. but when you said you have standard feet you saved me from buyer's remorse lol

I cracked up reading your post. Trying to force a 104.2 foot into a 103.8 shoe just because you got a huge discount 😂 The 242 is the shoe for more people and they come in wide. I’m lucky I have standard feet and they don’t swell while riding lots of hot kms

@@SeeYouUpTheRoad hahaha they look so beautiful tho, they're not cramped but sadly they're too snug and I'm not a racer. my 242 looks like a caterpillar in comparison even in full black but I still love them, congrats on your PBP sir!

Colors guessing: Black for easy clean looks when dirty, with white & pink rev logo that stands out on black background. Palomar is on my list of big SoCal climbs to do one day. Which way did you do the Everest ride; on south switchbacks or east road along the ridge? End at Junction or observatory parking lot? Looking forward to the transnational coast to coast rider and bike setup.

I did South Grade to include Hwy 76 so 11.7 mile climb 4200 feet per repeat. This is the switchback road. I will see how much Tommy is willing to talk about his bike. I’m curious too!

Haven't tried the Lake custom insoles, but I'm interested to hear about them. Been pretty happy running some Sole (performance (cork) thin with met pads) in my new entry level Lake MX 176s. I went with those insoles due to the thickness, or lack thereof (1.6mm) which is lower than I think the Tread Labs or Icebug slims that came up in my search. Leaves a bit of room for wedges and good arch support for my highish arches. Good to hear mention of alternatives to the quite expensive G8 Performance Pros that are ubiquitous on cycling KZbin. Definitely think the tip to change out shoes at controls is a good one!

With SS508 just finishing this past weekend, how does your PBP experience training, prep, and ride compare to your 508 experience.

Hello Ken that sounds like a great video idea! I have to say the 508 being a shorter distance is much harder hour for hour. PBP is longer and continues to wear on you past the amount of time you would have already finished the 508. Let me see what I can come up with for a video. If you have specific questions that will help significantly Thanks for watching and thanks for the video idea! Please consider subscribing

Great wrap up videos. So interesting to learn about the details that help make the experience better. I’d like to hear about your ride strategy and how the route could dictate specific training, equipment, and perhaps mental approach to the event. Here are some questions: 1. Are the climbs more intense for SS508 vs PBP and does that factor in with training, equipment, and strategy? Did you approach training the same for both? 2. How do you keep your mind sharp for such long efforts. I think riding doubles are long days. These are another level. Was it easier mentally at PBP to ride occasionally with a group or pace line vs. SS508 solo effort? 3. Did you use similar nutrition strategy for both events and what would you do different for each? Maybe you covered this in a previous post PBP video. Thanks for your time and sharing your knowledge and experience. -Ken (subscriber)
