To me, for an intelligent but emotionally unstable 17/18 year old girl it's not that unrealistic. Also the writers wanted to take Paris with us to Yale, so it would only make sense to create a scenario in which someone as obsessed with Harvard as Paris was had no choice.

This shows in episodes like the construction episode where Rory only does it because she realized that she had to volunteer to get noticed by these colleges, which she had never done before. So I just find it weird that she only needed good grades because that’s not enough for Ivy League schools like Yale and Harvard.
