For a 7 hour train trip, the food service should be a bit more evolved than just snacks that you'd expect for Paris-Lyons in 2 hours. But then again, their goal is to pack as many people as they can in a train so food service car reduces how many passengers you can carry.

You are right about the TGV food. I almost always buy something from the Paul outlet before boarding (Le Savoureux is my favourite) and stick to coffee from the bar. Exception is leaving St Jean de Luz Ciboure on the 07:20 to Paris (no Paul and nothing else open!) so I get a Formule Petit Dej between Dax and Bordeaux (allongée, jus d'orange, yaourt, madeleine; 9-50€ last year)

My view of eating on a train is that if there's no decent cooked to order table service with menus and waiters, you're usually better off buying food and beverages before boarding, from a local market or bakery and have an on-train "picnic". You get a much broader choice of better food at lower prices, and it's just more fun. Train "cafe" food is usually mediocre. The only thing really worth buying is coffee or tea as it's fresh and hot.

What the EU lacks is HS international connections as good as the internal ones. This goes for Italy too: I had to take a flight from Northern Italy to Budapest and our plane got delayed because it was still on the other side of the continent. Had we had a HSL from Milan to Budapest running through Venice and Ljubljana we could have gone to Budapest and back. I get it's all difficult politically (and also practically, due to the terrain and whatnot), but jesus it would have been so comfortable. And to think that Budapest is as far away from Northern Italy as Apulia or Calabria...
@SeverityOne
@SeverityOne 6 ай бұрын
@@Hastdupech8509 It's not so much the EU that is dragging its feet, but the national operators. Obviously, the national operators are largely controlled by their national governments, who make up the EU, so it's all a little complicated. But what has happened over the years is that the national monopolies have slowly been eroded by the EU. This was almost unthinkable 35 years ago, but nowadays you see different operators within one country. Some countries are more progressive than others - especially Germany and the Netherlands are dragging their feet - but bit by bit, it's becoming more and more of a reality. It's just happening _very_ slowly, though.

@@SeverityOne what do you mean the netherlands and germany are dragging their feet? both countries made international travel open access, and have more operators operating in their countries than either france belgium or spain. It are the french and the belgians who are trying to stop the italians from running on amsterdam-paris, not the dutch.
@SeverityOne

@@daanwolters3751 Tell me, how many international operators are running high-speed trains in either Germany or the Netherlands, that are not in some sort of joint venture with DB and NS, respectively? Or how about that the Dutch government handed an exclusive licence to NS just before the deadline, after which they would no longer be able to? Sure, France/SNCF aren't exactly the most open to competition, but at least there are FS and RENFE trains running in France.

RENFE and SNCF are like a couple of spoiled brats. Despite wonderful connectivity having been created, there's only around half a dozen cross border trains each day. Absolutely pathetic. Not that other countries outside the BENELUX are that great with regards to international HS travel. There's not 1 international connection (once again, outside the BENELUX) comparable to any of the internal ones (like the Paris-Marseille or the Turin-Salerno or any of the multiple lines Spain has built). Took this journey last October, as part of a longer journey going Munich -> Paris -> Barcelona in one day (both in TGV Euroduplex). I enjoyed it, the views on the slow sections are really amazing. Water on boths sides, docks, historic towns, fortress, also the cathedral you can see from the bridge in Beziers. But it also feels somehow bizarre compared to the high speed part. Going at speeds around just 30 km/h through Salses definitely added to this feeling (probably some line issues at that time). Such a shame that the LGV Montpellier-Perpignan will not be finished until maybe around 2044. Why are French so slow? I wonder if the Paris - Madrid route through Bordeaux ends up built faster than this. This really should be a critical infrastructure funded by EU at a very high priority...

The route through Bordeux is not expected till 2040 as soonest. It's incredibly annoying that while int seems that by 2030 all the Spanish connection between Madrid and the French border in Hendaye will be finished as a HSR, from Hendaye till Bordeaux (or at least till Dax) will be a single track line with no possibility of developing speed there.

The French Ouigos are second-generation TGV DASYE Duplexes, from TGV POS engines with central cabins, which became the standard, and 8 cars from TGV networks. The central cabin comes from the direction of traffic depending on the country. The Ouigo for Spain also have the chance to own a bar car to enjoy delicious food.

Some regional trains from Barcelona to France (Toulouse is confirmed, other destinations aren't yet) will come operated by FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya) They've secured european funding, but without the rolling stock... it's still years to do it. Also Ouigo in Spain has grown in destinations and going all doubles in Madrid - Barcelona, so they have now 14 train sets. The bet is, what will finish earlier, Sagrada Familia or Barcelona Sagrera. This route (for lenght) deserves Business Première

Also, the TGV is boring because it lacks the train sound and feel that we still have in Canada with thet clickety clack sounds and bumps along the road 🙂 On the issue of only 10 passenger trains per day in tunnel, what sort of restrictions are there because tracks are shared with freight trains?

It is so nice to have that and rode the TGV several years ago. Here however, we can't have nice things due to corporate greed. However they are starting a high speed rail, the first true high speed rail between Rancho Cucamonga and here in Las Vegas by 2028. Not holding my breath and if Trump returns, highly doubtful that it will come to fruition.

Am I the only one not interested in first class if you don't at least get free non-alcoholic drinks? Maybe because I am short and don't need a bigger seat but if I am paying extra they could at least give me a cup of coffee lol

The problem here is the 7 hours part. I love trains and have started planning my holidays to Europe by train where I can but the issue here is that those of us that would do this are totally atypical. If someone is thinking of going from London to Barcelona, and they look up the train options and realise it’s basically 12 hours by train they’re not even going to consider it (and that’s ignoring the price - unless you book way in advance). The idea that it’s going to take until 2034 to finish the final sections of LGV and cut the journey time is madness and frankly proof that neither the French government nor the EU are serious about tackling climate change.

Living in spain i am very grateful for your video and opinion. If I want to go to Holland, I am Dutch, from Valencia I will try to connect the three trains I need in order to complete the journey. If this ticket is 79 euro, the train from Valencia to Sants 50 and the Paris Amsterdam 75 it means a single will cost around 200 euros. In addition I need to take a metro from Gare de Lyon and Gare du Nord. It would be quite a trip and taking me around 18 to 20 hours. The direct bus is half price and with free luggage. Guess why they need to improve the train services to Spain? Cause of the politics between Renfe and SNCF, a shame these hot heads have too little commercial interest. And more taxes for flying will also help. But thats not in my lifetime probably with the far right parties on the rise everywhere, cheap flights is what people want most. Lets see what the European elections will bring us, probably bad news for trains and our climate....

The only thing you do in Barcelona is to take the next train to Madrid? Sacrilege! 🙂 Joking aside, because I know it's essentially your job, or at least a source of income, to make these videos. But Barcelona is such a wonderful city. We went there at the end of March, and it was one of the best holidays we ever had as a couple.
