The lyrics are horribly nationalistic. They hold a great meaning in terms of history, it's a revolution's war cry, but it is still a war cry that begs for blood. It feels like an updated vrsion is well over due. But the melody is still as beautiful as ever, so there's that.

@@adminjamie La Marseillaise has been our national anthem from 1795 to 1804 during the 1st Republic (Between the revolution and the 1st Empire) and came back since 1879 (3rd Republic). But the song was written by Rouget de Lisle in 1792 as a war chant against Austria and was originally used by the Army of the Rhine. Hope I could help !

I watched the performance live on the TV, and it touched my soul deeply beyond words I could express for the first time ever. I wasn't even French. I guess this is what the magic of the music and this magnificent arrangement brings. This has marked the end of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics so beautifully. La chair de poule en entendant cette version à la cérémonie de clôture, la relance avec le rythme au xylophone était super bien pensée et j'adore tellement l'entrée du piano qui appuie la basse tout en faisant virevolter sa main droite. La Marseillaise n'a jamais été aussi classe et élégante.

Le contraste, la légèreté de la flûte et de la pédale des violons et la vivacité des cuivres, l'harmonie qui module à certains passage, cette accompagnement des cordes qui valsent comme la surface d'une rivière. Ça sonne tellement l'aventure, les émotions d'espoir et d'accomplissement. C'est un pur chef d'œuvre contemporain ! C'est juste incroyable, j'ai pas de mots pour décrire cette magnificence musicale ! Love and greetings from China. I watched this on TV and loved it so much that I searched it on KZbin and watched it again and again. Each country has its own defining culture, and the Olympics are a great vehicle for the host country to showcase it. The French have done an extraordinary job. The choice of Marseillaise comes as no surprise, but the rendering is epic, elegant, and evocative. The aerial filming, the selection of musical instruments (especially flute at the beginning, marimba and timpani in the middle, and saxophone at the end), the indoor (not least at Musée du Louvre) and outdoor settings: everything is just perfect. The most immensely surprising and gratifying moment comes when the camera moves skyward and when viewers think the show's over, Thomas Pesquet appears, playing saxophone from outer space. No doubt this last scene of serenity and timelessness will live in the memories of many. Bravo to all the performers. Looking forward to the Paris 2024 Olympics!
