Paris - your channel came into my KZbin feed and it brings back fond memories.... I graduated from UW-M with an engineering degree even before you were born! You are probably graduated by now....congrats!! A few comments / thoughts on the UW-M and what future students should / should not do with their time there: • This is a very unique and special time in your life and you will only go through it once - so don't blow it! • Enjoy the full experience, make friends, have fun, attend parties but don't make partying your #1 priority!!! • You are there to get an education, so get one that actually matters!!! • If you don't get a degree that is in high demand, you will struggle once you graduate and you don't want to find out when you are 30 that your chosen career is a dead end!!! • Remember, the time you spend at the UW can make you hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars or cost you the same - your choice! What do you want to get out of it??!!! • If there is one thing that can make a significant difference ina person's future / quality of life for the remainder of their adult life, it is the time you spend at the university! So don't blow it!!! • UW-M while large geographically, is one of the most beautiful campuses of any major university! • As for dorms, stay at the lakeshore dorms if at all possible. The south east dorms sound like party central and were called the Zoo when I was at UW-M... sounds like things have only gotten worse with the smell of weed being common place! Good luck to all future and current students - it will be one hell of a ride!!!!

I'd say with the lakeshore dorms (as well as the quieter SE dorms like ogg, smith, & chad) it is very hit or miss. I lived in Kronshage and got to know almost everyone in my dorm. People were very social and partied, but were also down for a chill movie night. Conover and Showerman are the nicer houses of Kronshage, and they have laundry inside. Everything was super clean and nice; it felt like a cute cabin on the lake. However, I've had friends that didn't have as social lakeshore experiences. Personally, I loved lakeshore because it's overall a more active, outdoorsy and chill environment. On nice days everyone is out walking, running, or hammocking. My impression was people were generally more down to earth on lakeshore. The main complaints I heard from friends living in SE were that it was super loud and people could be a bit more on the fake side (caring more about appearances, etc - definitely not true for everyone who lives there). The bottom line is a lot of it comes down to luck and what you make of it! You can always make friends elsewhere if your dorm doesn't pan out the way you want it. If anyone has any questions, I'm more than willing to help out.

I mean compared to a metropolis it's obviously way nicer, all hobbiton like. but can't beat the smoothie in mount horeb, and blue mound state park. the extreme weather times are indeed horrid, but it's a passing thought and doesn't really leave a bad taste in memory once u are out. the spring and early summer and the fall are truly worth it.

I recommend the metro transit system as a viable transportation resource. Bus rides are free for students and go to every corner of the city. Just learn to read maps and schedule. Interacting with others in the community and seeing all parts of the city can be fun. And there are tons of stops. When I was there in grad school, I lived on the east side. Even though I had a car, I took the bus to campus and most places because parking can be a hassle, an gas and parking passes can hit the budget. Time on the bus is good for reading etc and for unwinding.

I live in Kronshage and for the most part, I really like it! it's pretty cheap compared to other dorms and the rooms are pretty nice. I also have a really good lake view from my room. Good job Paris. Here's a little history of the school and life in Madison. UW is a great school to attend. A degree from here carries a lot of weight, in fact of Fortune 500 companies, Madison had put 14 CEO's in the 500, more than any other school in the country. The student life was a blast (not sure now) back in the day. Things to look forward to consisted of Mifflin street block party, Halloween on State, Concerts on the Square, Brat Fest, Taste of Madison on the Square, Iron man challenge and if your brave enough the Polar Bear challenge, more parties and bars downtown with a handful that stood the test of time like the Kollege Club, Wando's, Paul's Club, The Nitty Gritty (birthday bar). If you have a different sexual orientation there are several places to meet people because Madison has in general been considered in the past as the most liberal city in the Midwest. Crime rate is low ( most crimes occur on campus - a lot of drunk students do stupid things ) but thats minimal. Once a Badger, always a Badger and your experience will be one you cherish for life, in fact after going into the rat race, many students come back. One word of advice, if your frugal it's advisable you grocery shop off campus, head out to the east side Woodman's market ( take E. Washington to Milwaukee street and follow it just before Hwy 51, largest store with the largest variety and lowest prices in the city. I hope this helps you and best of luck with your education. As a who has gone to three different schools (UW-Madison, CU-Boulder, and UofM-Ann Arabor), I can say that UW-Madison is the best place in terms of living expenses and the quality of education. Also, Madison is a hidden gem. The Winter can be little bit tough in Madison, but it is a very beautiful city in the summer. People in Madison are the best; you cannot find nicer and more welcoming people than the people in Madison. And now Scott Walker is gone, I bet Madison is going to be even better.

@MacMac5485 жыл бұрын
Abby G i’m not Paris but I go to UW too; we have a decent non-white population but many of the racial minorities are Asian. There’s not a lot of Hispanic/black/other racial minorities here. Also theres a lot of study abroad programs. You might be able to talk to a study abroad coordinator and get more info on that but I know a lot of students do it

Abby G what does the ethnic diversity of the university have to do with anything? That is a silly question.

I won’t lie, I don’t see a ton of diversity in my dorm / classes / at parties and stuff. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any, they just tend to be in separate groups/organizations & there’s a lot of international students. & there are TONS of study abroad opportunities it’s actually crazy!!

Sometimes, I don't even know why I'm watching a video where I won't be going to that college... But I honestly can't wait for this fall for me!
@katanastasiax5 жыл бұрын
One thing to remember when living on any college campus would be that there are ALWAYS going to be people that party... I go to a community college and my first year I lived in our "high rise" which was essentially party central. On the south side of campus, there was also a dorm that was party based where the athletes live (shocker, at least for my college). I wish I had a lot of food options because last year I didn't really have much to choose from as we just had the main dining hall and the cafe. I ended up eating a lot of ramen and mac and cheese there. Luckily, I live in an apartment with my friend from last year and I couldn't be happier. I am more in control of what I want to eat, and I have my own room so I don't have to fight over the thermometer. That's so insane that you never got classes cancelled for the polar vertex. We had two days off because of the weather and I think two more for blizzards. I agree with your southerner thing because they really complain too much when they have perfect weather... Um hello, high 40s-60s? I'd take that anyday over -50 degree weather with windchill.

Ryan Oberdorf what hall do you live in? And what would be your top 3 lakeshore halls?
@ryanoberdorf9285 жыл бұрын
@@maxanderson1524 I live in Adams residence hall which is a nice little dorm housing the international learning community and it has mostly single room with the option of a few large doubles if you want a roommate. Also a lot of foreign exchange/ international students live here so there is always something cool going on like a cultural celebration or food sharing. Lastly this dorm has a lot of students students studying poli sci and international relation, so if you are doing one of those majors you are sure to meet a lot of people with similar interests. (Ps there is a small dining hall, Carson's, across the street). I think Adams would be my first choice dorm. My second choice would be Elizabeth Waters Hall. It is very centrally located. It is nearest to all of the classes that most first year students take and it has a dining hall in the building on the first floor. The building also has a large running community and a lot of stem majors since it has the women in science and engineering learning community. And since the dorm is so large and many people stop there for lunch from all over you are sure to meet a lot of people and will find a place for yourself among friends fast. Lastly, I think Bradley is a good choice of a dorm. This dorm is next to Dejope which has the second biggest dining hall on campus (it is the BEST dining hall). Bradley has a learning community in it that is focussed on first year students and helping them assimilate into college life. Everybody there is a first year student and there are a lot of activities organized to help students get out and meet people as well as have fun and learn about the campus. I also think this dorm has the most "college dorm" feel out of the 3 I mentioned because is has the room split down the middle just like you would imagine a college dorm looks like. Although i did only mention these 3 dorms, there are many other on lakeshore that are also great and have lots of advantages like Tripp, Slicter, Kronsage, Cole, Sullivan, Philips, etc. And i would encourage you to go on a housing tour if possible or go on a virtual tour on the madison website. Final note: philips is actually the strangest of all the dorms because each room has its own bathroom. Pro- it is more private. Con- it is the furthest dorm from all of the classroom buildings.
@ryanoberdorf9285 жыл бұрын
@@harshalkawale12 Housing bills your account twice a semester, so it is not monthly. The meal plan and housing are paid at the same place on your student portal. The cost per dorm varies depending on where you live, but i think it is about $9,000-$11,000 PER YEAR (depending where you live). The nicer and newer the dorm is, the more it is likely to cost. Check out UW dorms on the website, they have virtual tours on there and room dimensions and costs and all other things like what type of things are offered in the community. There are 3 different tiers to choose between for the meal plan. All of the food at the dining halls is a la carte, so you pay for each item individually, it is NOT like a buffet like some other schools offer. Basically, there will be a n amount of money on your card and you pay with that for the year. Tier 1 is $1,400 and that is split for 2 semesters...so you will have $700 on your card at the beginning of each semester. The same is for tier 2 ($2,200 for the year. $1,100 per semester) and tier 3 ($3,150 per year. $1,575 per semester). I recommend tier 2 because it is what I have and it stretches the year nearly perfectly. Tier 1 is typically not enough and i have friends that often have to load extra money to their account. Lastly, any money not used will stay on your card and roll over to the next years for your duration at UW. So if you know you will use it eventually, tier 3 is good and you will probably not have to worry about running out of money at the end of the semester like I am close to doing lol.

My husband was at Tripp, but of course we weren't even dating at the time!!! I was a Spanish major so being at Liz Waters was perfect because it's across from Van Hise hall. Also speech therapy majors should look into lakeshore dorms because the speech therapy program is by the lake. I would live in the lakeshore dorms if you want to major in engineering, life sciences, and ag majors too! SOOO nice to meet you!! One thing I’d like to add as a misconception about the lakeshore dorms: those kids do like to party haha It’s just nice to have a scenic walk home and live next to the lake. Waking up and walking to class can be hard in the winter but fall and spring is so fun and enjoyable and it really is a beautiful area with a lot going on, there’s just not as much noise from the city like sirens and construction as she mentioned. Everyone likes to say they’re “quiet and not as social” which is very wrong. The area itself is quiet, and you’ll find more people with less interest in drinking, but that by no means makes you less social than people in southeast. (I graduated in 2018)

I go to UW Madison, a sophomore, but all I have to say is the professors SUCK and if you are coming from a small school you need to be prepared to struggle.

I lived in Lakeshore (Kronshage last year) and here are a few things about the dorms there: -Dejope (super new, everyone wants, lots of athletes live here, dining hall downstairs) -Kronshage (8 separate houses so you only really get to know the people on your floor which isn't that much, really old, gross bathrooms, no party scene in here, only 2 houses have laundry rooms) -Cole/Bradley/Sullivan (all look super similar, also super old, but not as old as kronshage, and people here typically don't want to be there, but I would say they do party a good amount in these surprisingly) -Leopold (underrated, it's super nice inside) -Adams (mostly singles) -Tripp (also mostly singles) -Slichter (kinda random, but they have nice bathrooms) Unless you're an athlete or someone who is really, really into studying, this is your place. You can definitely take the bus, but classes are typically at LEAST a 10 minute walk.

haven't graduated high school yet just giving myself some heads up about which college I might want to go too...I don't want to go somewhere where I'll look like the odd one out because I don't party and my morals and life goals don't permit...I am also going to look into NYU or perhaps other Ivy League schools, but for now I am going to have a fun time this summer at UW Madison..

You definitely can but uw definitely isn't very driving or parking friendly at all. the very few people i know with cars keep them parked at their sibling or friends apartment/house far away from the dorms. you could also rent out someone's space through craiglist or facebook but it's likely pretty expensive, and not close to the dorms.

You said you grew up near campus... where did you grow up? I grew up in Waunakee and Middleton so I grew up around there too! In regards to the school, I always loved the UW, however, the weather has officially made me want to go to school in the south because growing up in the midwest sucks!! I have lived all through out the midwest and let me tell ya, I'm moving to Georgia in a little over a month and I'm excited to get out of this frozen tundra!! Wisco is definitely known as like the biggest party school in America tho so definitely a bonus! I always remember going there for badger games and the streets were PACKED!!! Anyway, go badgers and nice to see another video!!

Hey Paris: my friend Barbara is a HS Junior m and WI-Madison is her top choice. One thing that bums her is that UW isn't as diverse as she'd like. She's a white girl from rural MT, wants to spread her horizons. As weird as it might sound, she'd prefer on non-white roomie, will she have trouble finding one? She's hoping to be an Area/Ethnic Studies major. Which dorms are closest to the Social Science departments/classes.

don't sweat the weather here in Wisconsin,. like they say if you don't like it, just wait 10 mins, it will change! lol. I have lived in this town for 45 years and can say that it is something to behold. after a snow fall it is beautiful! I work at the UW Madison doing building maintenance and would not change that for anything. there are plenty of clothing stores on and near campus and everyone will help to keep you warm here. I see guys wearing shorts all winter, (they are nuts!) but to each their own. welcome to the frozen tundra! good luck with your studies.
