"Paris Syndrome" is an interesting concept. I live in Hollywood, and I think there is a "Hollywood Syndrome" too. Tourists expect it to be all glitzy and glamorous, but it's kinda not. And it was kind of fun to hear you mention that French people are fascinated with New York, Brooklyn, and Hollywood - Whenever I fill out a detaxe form or check into a hotel in France, my address usually gets a reaction and a few interested questions :-) Cool vid, thanks! PS: You can't see the Hollywood Sign from everywhere in Hollywood, either ;-)

Yes we are interessed because it is far away and lot of french people don't have the money to travel. If we look on TV New-York is only wall-street or Brooklin and it is full of murderers and self-made men, it is very exotic. So, when you meet someone coming from USA you have a lot of questions about the "real" america, because it is intersting
@travellingaccordian3 жыл бұрын
I think Paris Syndrome also has to do with the fact that Japan is incredibly clean. Tokyo definitely has the cleanest streets of any city I’ve ever been to in the world. So I can imagine that it is quite a shock.

I find this show ultra-cringey because it feels like it gives Americans permission to act badly when in France and still get rewarded. Being loud or overly assertive is really rude and makes French people not like us.

@@joelmiller674 No one's trying to make it deep though. The writers just do the bare minimum for representation regarding casting and most times it's just misconstruing Paris or caricaturizing everything to romanticized proportions. The french girl at the restaurant says "She wants her steak cooked better"... You would say she wants it cooked more, the way she said it is so rude. Not that it justifies the reaction from the waiter/cook but it made me pause.
@Street_French4 жыл бұрын
ah iteresting we didn't even notice that, it's true that she said "mieux cuit". it should be "plus cuit", but what she said also kind of means more so it kind of works

Also she offered to switch meals with her. But they had the same meal. In English for meat we say, 'well done' for meat that is cooked to the point where it is not pink in the middle. Maybe that is why she says cooked better, to mean cooked more.

That’s just really false. The waitress will always ask you if you yant it: saignant, medium or well cook. And if it’s not good you can ask and it’s not a problem. All the show is really really cliché. As a French people it’s really funny and ennoying for me
@OsefKincaid3 жыл бұрын
@@soleneguyot7041 Déjà que je suis plutôt du genre à manger même si c'est pas très bon, je peux absolument pas m'imaginer de demander à ce que ça soit "mieux cuit"... I was in Paris for the first time last year and managed to go there right during the metro strike, it was very confusing. Unfortunately the first person we interacted with, who worked at a train station, was really rude and laughed at us for trying to buy train tickets and accidentally buying the wrong ones. Thankfully he was the exception, everyone else were much nicer and helpful even though my French is limited to basically bonjour, merci and pardon (I also think it helped that I made it clear that English is not my first language and that I am making an effort to communicate on equal terms). Your videos makes me want to try to learn some more French though and go back to France!

Paris is 1 town in France (one french people generally don't like much. I only spent 1 day there in all my life, and not because i wanted. Enough to confirm that i didn't like it). If you travel around the country, you will see many, many different kind of places, people, languages, panorama and even folklore. To some extent, there are more variations than even the US, because in the end, France is an unofficial federation of plenty of different countries which still haven't completely meshed up in 1 country, despite the long History (don't say Corsicans that they are french, you will have problems). You can find moutains, swamps, hills, fields, penguins, tropical forests, lions, or even lagoons in France. In this regard, it is a bit like India, the UK, China or Russia. That is probably the most important thing to know about France.

I’m enjoying this for several reasons, like 1) I like how y’all show the Eiffel tower’s true proximity and how it looks in the background vs the film trick they did because I’ve worked with films and am always trying to help people (mostly young people/teen students) understand that they can’t compare themselves and their real lives to movies & tv because it’s not real. This has of course sort of diminished a bit with the tech savvier ones but not as many as you’d think. 2) I personally really like y’all doing the videos and explanations together, it’s such a nice complementary team haha! It’s man/woman POV, French/American POV, and like bf/gf POV which are all fun and different and nice to hear. And 3), I like the way the show is a good example for y’all to bounce off so many details and information I might now have noticed. For example, that bonjour thing from ep 1 was a revelation for me lol. I could have heard you explain it and then probably would have forgotten it, but with a funny example like this show it sticks better. Visual learner I guess lol. I’m enjoying this, thanks guys! ♥️ Oh and quick sidenote, we pronounce it “learnt” here in TX too lol! So that was a funny detail.

Really nice video. Thanks Maya and Charlie. I'm learning French and it's always great to see and hear your French. Also, about the Eiffel Tower looking the way it does - my explanation (could be wrong) - it's because of the lens they're using to film the shot. In television, long lenses are used and long lenses tend to squeeze perspective and things, even being distant will appear pretty close. Would love if you could test this theory though, you'd probably require some really expensive equipment. 😕 Edit: Okay, I commented way too early. At the end when Maya showed the actual location, well, yeah the shot in the show does look fake 😂

It's really funny because back in '09 when when we were "trying" to go to Eiffel Tower with my sister, we would think it's so close but the more we walked, the further it was. PLUS, I cannot believe how much alike Greece is with France when it comes to strikes. It's soooo funny.

haha ☺ ah yeah ? didn't know there were so many strikes there lol

Three things: 1. Woo-woo - quelle jolie montre ;) 2. I want more of Maïa doing anglophone accents. This is great. 3. Yes! Arrondissement tours! One per episode! Great idea!
