Parity check is a simple method of checking for errors in a communications systems.
I'm Mr. Woo and my channel is all about learning - I love doing it, and I love helping others to do it too. I guess that's why I became a teacher! I hope you get something out of these videos - I upload almost every weekday, so subscribe to find out when there's something new!

Best explanation of parity checking I've come across. Most start with unnecessarily detailed explanations of XOR first. Great teaching style too.

Is the reason this is outdated or deemed less reliable now because, say there was some interference, two of the bits changed from 0 to 1? That way the computer would still think the packet being received was received properly.

I didn't catch that even parity and odd parity were two different verification techniques the first time around. I had to watch it again. The idea of a parity bit also reminds me a little about the idea of a signed bit.

You get a bad check if an even number of bits in the packet flips (..2,4,6,8) for both Odd parity check and Even parity check. 00110111 --> 01010111 etc. A protocol sending multiple copies of the package makes the check way stronger. I would recommend 4 packages.

How to do conversion to binary from decimal. You could approach it thinking "what's the biggest power of 2 you can fit".... or you can just divide by 2 and look at the result and keep doing that until you reach 1, which in my opinion is easier. 27 -> odd -> 1 26/2 = 13 -> odd -> 1 12/2 = 6 -> even -> 0 6/2 = 3 -> odd -> 1 2/2 = 1 -> odd -> 1 Final in reverse: 11011 152397 ... What's the biggest power of 2 you can fit? Gee I don't known, even with a calculator it's too bothersome to find out, and I'm too lazy to look at my 2^n table. 152397 -> odd = 1 152396 / 2 = 76198 -> even = 0 76198 / 2 = 38099 -> odd = 1 38098 / 2 = 19049 -> odd = 1 19048 / 2 = 9524 -> even = 0 9524 / 2 = 4762 -> even = 0 4762 / 2 = 2381 -> odd = 1 2380 / 2 = 1190 -> even = 0 1190 / 2 = 595 -> odd = 1 594 / 2 = 297 -> odd = 1 296 / 2 = 148 -> even = 0 148 / 2 = 74 -> even = 0 37 (36) -> odd = 1 18 -> 0 9 (8) -> 1 4 -> 0 2 -> 0 1 -> 1 Final in reverse: 10'0101'0011'0100'1101. Fits at least 3 bytes. or a 32-bit word. Now how is a parity bit set? A computer doesn't actually "count" the number of ones in a word, it just keeps track of what it sends over the wire. Whenever a 1 is sent over the wire, it toggles a control bit. At the end of the transmission it just sends the state of this control bit over at the next transmission clock pulse.

Hey Eddie Great Video! BTW my textbook says that the left most bit(MSB) is the parity bit. Are both correct? Like as the receiver and transmitter agree upon 'even' or 'odd' parity, do they also agree upon if the left most or right most bit is used as parity bit. Does one have any significant advantages over the other? Thank you.

Correct me if im wrong but I think you made a mistake. A parity check isnt 7 bits + a parity bit its 8 bits + a parity bit. So you get nine bits but the ninth bit will be removed at the reveiving end so that it doesnt affect the data. Reference: Comptia A+ study guide
