Park MGM, formerly known as the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, has an interesting history. Let’s take a look:
Monte Carlo (1996-2018):
The resort originally opened as the Monte Carlo on June 21, 1996.
Its design was inspired by the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco.
Over time, however, the Monte Carlo lost its luster and became just another casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.
In January 2008, a fire caused by welding occurred on the rooftop of the 32-story hotel, leading to its evacuation and closure. Thirteen people were treated for smoke inhalation.
Despite the fire, the Monte Carlo reopened three weeks later, but it suffered significant financial losses due to damage and closure.
Hotel32:
After the fire, the top floor underwent water damage and received a total renovation. It reopened as Hotel32 in August 2009.
Hotel32 operated as a hotel-within-a-hotel, offering 50 exclusive rooms.
Rebranding as Park MGM:
In June 2016, MGM Resorts announced plans to renovate the Monte Carlo and rebrand it as Park MGM.
The name change took effect on May 9, 2018.
The extensive two-year renovation, costing more than $550 million, transformed the property into the sleek, modern Park MGM.
The top four floors of the tower were rebranded as NoMad Las Vegas, a new hotel-within-a-hotel.
Park MGM now includes a 76,982-square-foot casino and a total of 2,993 rooms, including those at NoMad.
The resort’s transformation aimed to appeal to younger, sophisticated travelers, moving away from the outdated image of the Monte Carlo.
Distinctive Features of Park MGM:
The lobby of Park MGM feels cozy compared to other large casino lobbies, with marble floors, mirrored columns, and glittery chandeliers.
The hotel’s design resembles a stylish boutique hotel found in New York or Paris rather than a typical giant casino hotel on the Strip.
The outdoors and nature are loosely incorporated, especially given its adjacency to MGM’s outdoor entertainment district, The Park, and the Park Theater where artists like Lady Gaga perform.
Park MGM offers a fresh and sophisticated experience for visitors seeking something different in Las Vegas.
