Park West Gallery review: "I bought a Marcel Mouly limited edition lithograph which the certificate states is "sighed". I bought so many pieces from Parkwest over the years that I didn't think to double check the signature. The piece was very dark where a signature goes (bottom right corner). I recently tried to sell it and discovered, unlike the apprisal given me by Parkwest, the piece IS NOT SIGNED. I complained and Parkwest's nasty lawyer told me to F@*lK off..."

I just checked on Mouly's recently listed auction results for signed lithographs from just this year (2022). Hammer prices are as follow: $75 (11/06/2022), $25 (11/06/2022), unsold (08/06/2022), $30 (06/06/2022), $75 (24/06/2022), unsold (07/06/2022), unsold (07/06/2022), unsold (07/06/2022), 2 works $250 (09/04/2022), $370 (29/03/2022), $125 (17/03/2022), unsold (05/03/2022), $213 (16/02/2022), $110 (21/01/2022). It would appear that your estimated value, even for a signed impression of a print by this artist, is substantially over-optimistic. Without wishing to be offensive, I would suggest that, for resale purposes, an unsigned impression is virtually worthless. Park West Gallery is notorious for over estimating the value of what they sell on cruise ships. I believe their CEO, Albert Scaglione, has fought several customer lawsuits for mis-selling. I'm afraid, this Mouly is one you will have to chalk up to experience. My advice is to remember why you bought the thing in the first place (presumably you liked it!) and try enjoying the piece for what it is and not mind too much that it wasn't a great investment.

I bought 3 pieces on my cruise. But didn’t learn until later doing my own research none are original. They mislead buyers, leave out info like there are hundreds of prints of the same thing. Newbird like me don’t know that. I do love my art. But I’ll go into it with more knowledge next time.

Wow that's crazy! I have bought a lot from Parkwest also. I can't believe he would not want to protect his reputation by sending you another work. And they have interviews with Mouly, they can certainly get it signed and resell it

That sounds like Park West. We dealt with them and are now out money. In my opinion, they are crooks.

I got tricked into buying some art at an auction recently on a cruise. The piece was only $50 which wasn't bad but it was bidding and they ended it before there was a winner so 2 of us got stuck buying it. Shipping was almost as much as the piece but I did win a free piece of art and was handed some art work on the way out. Still much cheaper than the casino. They claimed the piece I purchased had a value of around $700. I don't believe it though.

Has the piece has been removed from the frame to check for Mouly's signature? I ask this because I've seen Mouly's pieces framed differently where the observable artwork is only the part viewable which yours appears to be also. Others of the same work show the signature in the bottom right below the artwork. I don't know about your piece specifically but might be worth checking this if you haven't done so already. On a separate note never trust an auction house that appraises their own merchandise as they are incentives to overinflated their valuations. If you see something you like with ParkWest I recommend you annotating the information and find if cheaper elsewhere after the cruise.

As a fine artist AND art collector, I thank you for sharing this information! Since Covid hit (& my gallery closed), I have needed to find gallery representation, but hesitate to do so for this very reason. Bless you! Peace, smiles & Light ❤

I'm an artist, as well. Friends have tried to get me to contact Park West Gallery but I've always been under the assumption that they sell mass-produced "original" paintings. I'm not sure the correct term for it but from what I've been told, an artist will sit and reproduce the same painting a number of times. Please, correct me if I'm wrong. I've never dealt with PWG one-on-one so this is only hearsay.

They actually sell the original painting, prints, signed prints, and often hand embellished prints. They are not a factory of artists, but more like a factory FOR artists. When they represent you, they buy the art directly from the artists and reproduce it for mass consumption. Artists aren’t creating a bunch of the same paintings, rather, they are afforded more time to create because PWG is marketing and selling their work so they can spend time making more.

@@lizjoe21750 They are very keen on having prints made and asking the artist to spend 5 minutes with the "print" and hand embellish it so that its "unique" and "one of a kind." These have no more value then "prints" to me and most but its part of their sales pitch that gets people. I buy what I like; not to resell. I don't know who in their right mind would expect to "profit" from buying at retail and selling on ebay or anywhere else.

At 1.37 the author says he thinks they put shills in the audience to raise the price. I’ve attended at least 20-25 of their on board sales (hard to call them an auction when the price is set) and in all those I have only seen competitive bidding on the ships map. Never once have I seen a work out bid by another.

I was very close to buying a piece on a royal cruise, I loved the piece but I just felt like the girl selling me was just slimy, got a bad vibe about it and said I think I would like to wait, her attitude changed quickly and I was happy to get up and leave, it's too bad too because I liked the art :)

The cruise lines should be sued for allowing these fraudsters the space to conduct their frauds. There's a reason these people are selling off land where they'd be held to consumer laws.

All the Park West art is mass produced giclee, caldographs mainly and a few limited lithographs, but then they commission a new batch of lithographs making the lithographs essentially unlimited. Much of it is very attractive and if it comes framed it's worth at least a couple hundred bucks, but not worth thousands. Just how many Kinkades and Dali's of essentially the same art piece do you have to see on cruise ships to understand this is not valuable art? It is mass produced and not going to ever be worth much money. Just enjoy it. Yes, an artist's signature might make the piece a little more valuable, but not much. The artist will have signed his name to many hundreds of these, and often someone else signed the artist's name too. Yes, some people pay thousands too much for this art not realizing what it is. Buyer beware.

Yep. I figured that out after I spent way too much on a Dali. The seller led me to believe it was original. They don’t tell you it’s one of thousands of reprints. Misleading tactics at best.

As I watch this and read the comments I am taken back by how many people failed to recognize they should buy what they want; if you were thinking of paying "retail" and flipping it on eBay its not park wests fault - that's on you.

I think where the lawyers were coming from is you waited 25 to contact lawyers that there no signature. I mean didnt you take it out of the package if the art piece was mailed to you or if you were on the ship didn't you tell the art auctioneer be hey there no signature I am not not accepting this piece get me another one.

Is this man seriously expecting a replacement after 25 years? I mean, yeah, PWG probably accidentally sent an unsigned proof, but he owned it for 25 years and never noticed? I don’t see any judge weighing in this guy’s favor. 🤦‍♂️
