Glad you enjoyed it! You can also sometimes find used parke components for sale on Trumpetherald or eBay and that’s where you might find some of those less common variations.

Awesome video Jon, do you know if Parke offers acrylic rims? I have an allergy to both silver and gold and prefer the feel and grip of synthetic rims.

Hi Max! Glad you enjoyed. No, I do not think they sell acrylic rims but I know that Matt Frost at Frost Custom Brass makes copies of rims in most alternative material options so you might try him!

What are the advantages and physical qualities of an “orchestral” style rim?
@JonTalksTrumpet
@JonTalksTrumpet 4 жыл бұрын
I can do my best to describe how it feels to me, which is by no means necessarily the "objective truth". The Parke Orchestral rim, based on a Bach 1X rim, is a fairly flat rim with a pretty sharp "bite" which is the transition from the rim to the cup. I find this means that the rim sort of pins your chops down in a way that makes me feel very stable and able to commit fully even without being very warmed up. I find that articulation is a bit clearer too maybe due to the stable position of the aperture defined by the flat rim. Hopefully you find this useful, but the best thing to do is to just try as many things as you can so you can become familiar with what works for you, your anatomy, and your needs. If the orchestral rim is too sharp, maybe try their Orchestral R6 rim which is a bit rounder on the inside edge.

Great video Jon! Question for you: I’m ordering a 640-275-24 Orchestral, but I’m worried about the bite being too sharp. What are your experiences with the R6 rom. I know it has a softer bite then the standard rim, but how much softer? Is it roughly equivalent to a 1C, or a 1.5C Bach, or maybe a Pickett or Schilke Symphony rim? Any help you could give would be amazing! Where I’m from, we can’t try Parke’s easily.
@JonTalksTrumpet
@JonTalksTrumpet 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! Glad you enjoyed the video. I have an R6 rim but since I prefer the bite I don't really use it much. I would say the inside edge of the rim is probably more similar to a Bach 1C profile. I think it would be worthwhile to experiment with both though - the only way to really find what you like is by trying it! Sometimes our thoughts about what we prefer don't end up aligning with reality once we experiment.

They don't have a functional online store but you can always send Parke Mouthpiece Center a message via Facebook or Instagram. Alternatively I also find Parke mouthpieces for sale used on trumpetherald, fb marketplace, and sometimes ebay.

Hi Jon, I recently discovered your channel and am loving the nerd mouthpiece stuff! Great job, keep it up! I'm curious, what has been your experience with Parke 3 piece sets versus 1 piece models? About 20 years ago I bought some Parke parts from a friend and I ended up using them for some years, basically a 275-24 cup with 2 different 655 rims, one a Merkelo AMD one an Orchestral. After some trying I convinced them to make me some similar one piece models with a 655 rim. I bought 3, a 275, 278, and 280 cups. Unfortunately the rims were so different from my older screw rims that I didn't like them at all and ended up selling them. I think they were annealed, this was maybe 12 years ago or so.

Hi John! I'm flattered you are enjoying my content, I remember reading your posts on TH when I was in high school and college. I don't know the answer to your question, but I can take a swing at this one - as consistent as Parke is, there are several factors that can effect how the mouthpieces compare to each other *especially* over the long term since they have been making pieces for so many years. These answers are purely speculation on my part and could certainly be wrong, but are the things I can think of at the moment. 1. There is the slight variation in the actual tools being used in the CNC which wear down over time and are replaced periodically. 2. It even seems likely that they upgraded the actually CNC that they use at some point, which might have required some tweak of the CAM file that cuts the mouthpiece from brass. 3. There may have been a change in how the mouthpieces are buffed or plated which could lead to a slight difference in rim feel. 4. There could be a slight difference in how the 3 piece versions intersect compared to the smoothness possible with a 1 piece, but Parke is so committed to consistency I would be surprised if this was the case. 5. I know this wouldn't effect the rim but certainly annealed mouthpieces play and respond differently than the non-annealed versions. Also I'm jealous that you were "mouthpiece aware" when one could still easily order 1 piece mouthpieces from Parke. I will say one thing I've learned since becoming a fully obsessed mouthpiece nerd is to never sell a mouthpiece I like assuming I can get another one that you like just as much. I know this is a long answer but there are many possibilities as to the reasons for your experiences! Thanks for commenting and very glad you're enjoying my content.

Thanks for the long reply! Yeah I'm sure that the parts used in their shop change slightly over time. I remember being a little disappointed as those 1 piece models were quite different and aren't what I was looking for. I'm also a big mouthpiece collector. Lately the Reeves Classical 1c has been feeling great - we'll see how long that lasts! I heard your podcast with Ryan - great stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Is this system the same for their trombone mouthpieces?

I’m not totally sure, but it does seem to be very similar in how the numbers are calculated, but based on a different mouthpiece design (either the Jay Friedman or Alan Kaplan models). Here is a link to their comparison chart for trombone. imgur.com/6nhZEu4

Not too bad - $100 per each component of a 3 piece. So a rim, cup, and backbore would be $300. Still less than a Prana Resonance, LOL!
