After saving up her money for a long time my daughter Wawa was finally able to buy her dream car. She has always loved the Volkswagen Beetle and has been looking n marketplace for one for a while but could never find one in good shape that she could afford. I finally found one at a great deal that we just couldn't pass up so me and Tosh went and bought it with her money knowing she was going to love it. At $2000 dollars it was a great deal for it's great condition, now can we get it running so she can drive it for her first car when she gets her license?

Great job. My best advice is always: "stay stock to avoid creating your own problems". Replace the cobbled up coil/resistor set up in favor of an OEM original set up. Replace the rusted out muffler with a stock VW one with the 2 tiny little glass pack outlets sticking out. The engine needs the original designed exhaust back pressure to work correctly. Secondarily, the natural restriction of the stock exhaust is the factory designed "overspend governor" to prevent her from tossing the rods out the side of the crankcase when she "misses a shift at wide open throttle" as so many new drivers would tend to do! Earlier post below was correct...clutch plate was just rusted to the flywheel preventing it from releasing...ur all good now.

I was kind of struck by WaWa thanking the channels viewers towards the end of the video for their help in purchasing this car for her. It seemed natural, heartfelt and unscripted. She comes across as very authentic. She's a good kid who puts up with a lot. The ribbing and teasing and such would likely send any other kid over the edge and make them resentful and defensive. But not her. She seems to take it all in stride and come out the other side the better for it. Like I said. She's a good kid.

And $2k is a great deal. I know, I shop for them all the time. Just check the floor pan for rust, heater channels, rear deck etc. All these parts are still available if needed. Make sure to keep the 2 hoses connected in the engine bay. They send air from the fan to cool the heads. Those engine tins are crucial to cooling. Please check to be sure there aren't any nests in there blocking air flow. There are many experts on youtube. Mustie1, WickedWerks, 5150mx, Mike Fn Garage, and many more. You made me remember how thrilled I was to get mine way back then!

Congratulations Wawa, this is a great first car . I was a factory trained VW mechanic, the 1300 engine was a one year only engine (1966) it was a good engine. I would keep an eye out for a 1600 dual port engine , easier to get parts for and better performance. Engines are very easy to change . On a bet I pulled a engine, replaced clutch and pressure plate , reinstalled engine with all bolts and connections properly made in less than 30 minutes, treat it well, keep valves adjusted and it will be a great car 👍😊🎩

My only advice from personal experience with Bugs is that as the engine gets older it tends to burn a little oil. This means you should be checking oil with every gas fill up and have a funnel with a quart or two in the boot and you should be changing the oil diligently wvery 2k miles. Also I'm not surprised the clutch came back to life, almost every system in a Bug will take a pretty good beating before failure.
@PowellRoadDIY

Clutch plate was probably stuck to the fly wheel. Which would let the pressure plate still function. After it was ran a little bit , the clutch plate released from the fly wheel

Congrats on the first set of wheels 😊 As someone who has worked on several of these over the years, I offer the below advice (Feel free to accept or ignore as you see fit LOL 😊 ) First off, if that car was sitting for 23 years, it’s very likely that a rodent has made some kind of nest in the fan shroud. I would pull the engine (takes less then an hour) and pull off all the tins, that way you can be sure that nothing is blocking the airflow (great time to throw a coat of paint on them). Also that is a good time to inspect the oil cooler that resides under the tins, and replace the 2 O-rings that are on the bottom of it (If they are not leaking yet, they will). Be sure to check the thermostat to be sure it functions (Yes Bugs do have a Thermostat), it sits on (IIRC the passanger side) bottom of the engine cylinders and pulls a lever which opens and closes a flap in the tins, lets the engine warm up before full airflow goes over the cylinders. Speaking of cylinders, I would re-torque the heads, over time these engines have a habit of working the head bolts loose. Easy enough to do. Lastly, when y’all do the oil change, there is a ring of bolts around the drain bolt, pull those and make sure the screen isn’t plugged… Good luck!!!!!!

It’s great to see Wawa so excited about her first car. My brother and sister started with Beatles, but as I was the youngest, started off with a newer Rabbit. It’s encouraging to see the whole family get involved in the builds, even if Squeezy enjoys her own hobbies much of the time. Seeing Ralphie always eager to work in the shop is much more expected, but to see Wawa’s enthusiasm is always encouraging. And now she’s got stake in the game, working on her own car... This was my first car back in 1978, same color and everything. After my 2nd junk yard engine I had a hotrod engine built by a friend of mine. Had a two barrel Webber carb, shot throw shifter and a smaller steering wheel. I drove it until I pulled up to a stop sign and the fender fell off and it died of cancer, it was a sad day. Boy did we ever have some good times in that car. I know that you will too. The clutch disk was rusted to the flywheel, after driving it around it broke free. Put radial tires on it and it will stick to the road like glue. A family that erenchs together stays together ❤️ .

@@tannerpaisley-ve6dq I live in Florida, so many car accidents it's scary. I've heard Beetles from this era top out at like 55 mph, I honestly don't think it'd be safe to take out on a main road in this state especially not at busy times. I grew up in rural PA though, I would've definitely gotten a bug if one was available to me at the time! Still it's good to see someone getting the car and appreciating it, giving it a second lease on life while enriching her own.

I would say the clutch was rusted to the flywheel and pressure plate and you broke it loose. I think you have a fixed resister as a ballast resister changes resistance when it gets hot. Your 2N tractor should have a ballast resister behind the dash panel. Great video congrats to WaWa you deserve it.

My mom and dad bought me a 1974 Super Beetle for my first car for $1800 when I was 16. It was love at first sight and I begged my dad for it. Push button horn mounted under the dash… After factory cassette deck… Smelled like gasoline, all the time (not too surprising, I guess, considering the tank and air vents were in the same basic vicinity). The heat took about as long as it took me to get anywhere to actually get hot, and mine leaked oil something awful and had to have the floorboards patched every year at inspection time to prevent it from becoming a Flintstone car. Left me stranded on the side of the road more than once, but what a joy my little Bug was. They’re such special cars. Watching you all revive Wawa’s brought back so many wonderful memories of my own sweet Beetle. You’re whole family seems to have been bitten by the VW Bug!

Congrats on the Beetle. Just a couple things, it should run better with an OEM exhaust and the heating system will work better too. Adjusting the choke, wait till cooler temps at night (50-60) and turn the choke coil until the flap is lightly closed. I used to put carbs in the freezer for about 15 minutes after rebuilding to simulate winter temps (Michigan). Look up jbugs for parts.

Great video! Great family! Brought back my 1970 Beetle memories - doing a 180 on the PA turnpike in winter; trying to put on a muffler in the rain; getting 2 options when I bought the car - radio and "leatherette" seats; driving from Pittsburgh to Fort Sam Houston listening to Friday night schoolboy football.

I haven't had a chance to watch your entire video yet. But it's been fun so far. My very first car was a 1964 VW Bug. I bought in 1969, right after I graduated from high school. It had 35,000 miles on it. The owner wanted $750, but I was determined to play hardball. I used all my negotiating tricks and got him to come down the giant amount of $15 to $735. When I bought the car I didn't know how to drive a manual transmission, so my dad had to drive it home for me. Fortunately, VW transmissions are pretty much indestructible so I was able to learn rather quickly. Basic info. about VWs you probably know. Change the oil regularly. I did it every 3,000 miles. Clean or replace the screen and replace the gaskets. With today's synthetic oils you might get away with longer intervals. There were no synthetics in my day. Check with your mechanic. Valve adjustments should be done every 3,000-5,000 miles. I got pretty good at it so I would adjust mine every time I changed the oil. My friend had a '71 and it was the same color as yours! He had it for 10 years. It was very reliable. I think the valve gap on his was .006 but check a manual to be sure. I liked my Bug so much I eventually bought a '71 VW camper bus. I had that for about 6 years and it took me all over North America. It's STILL the most fun vehicle I ever owned. Have fun with your Bug. They're great little cars and seeing yours brought back some wonderful memories.

Congratulations on the VW . The first things I would recommend to do would be to switch to a starter from a 73 automatic beetle . It doesn’t require a bushing in the transmission bell housing and is a much bigger , sturdier unit .Rock auto Carries them . Next would be to add a hard start relay to the system to help it get maximum amperage when starting. It’s just a basic 30 amp relay mounted near the starter . Get a good set of Bosch style plug wires. The plastic on the cheap replacement ones will crack and break on you and leave you stranded at the least opportune time . Always run a zinc additive when you change the oil and don’t use synthetic motor oil . Good old fashion 20w50 should do the trick .

One of the advantages of the beetles is that there are only 4 bolts that hold the body onto the chassis and can be easily lifted off of the frame to give you more room to work on the car. When I was in high school my next-door neighbor was putting a sand dune body on an old VW bug, and had no problem removing the original body. Another thing that is so fun about the engine is that one person can carry it by themselves. My neighbor was an average size man and he put it on a workbench by himself so he could rebuild it for the conversion. Fun video thanks for sharing it.

Tell your dad to lower the front end put a little rake on her. She'll handle alot better. And make sure the frint control bushings are good as bad ones can cause death wobble. Goid luck and have fun!

I had it for about 9 months, I drove to a friends New Year’s Eve party, someone stole it that night. But that 1950 something was a monster,I drove it off road into places you can’t imagine. Almost went over backwards into a river. At this point it wasn’t safe to drive on the streets anymore. I HOPE YOU HAVE AS MUCH FUN AS I DID!!!!! That old bug is something to Cherish.
