*A lot of episode 1 is introducing the truck and telling it's story. We do get some work done in this episode though! I'm starting to think that it would've been easier to just go through the bottom with the gas tank, but the exhaust was very much in the way. Removing the bed was quite a bit of work. Looking for opinions on putting in the new one. Should we just try to cut off and/or move the exhaust and go through the bottom? It looks like most people install it that way. Episode 2 will be CRAZY!*

When I first started extracting all the junk out of my dad's old car, it took me hours to go through it while reminiscing about the smallest details, like old receipts, coins from the 60s, articles of clothing, etc. It's exciting.

@@Natd0gsef well it's in good enough shape that you probably wouldn't be wasting $ even if you had to put a motor in it. Small block ford crate motors are a good chunk of change but then you know what you have. And anything else is not a big deal.

I have a 93 f150 also! It sat for 10 years! I replaced the starter relay and it fired right up on 10 year old gas! Love the fuel injected 5.0L!!!

Nice looking truck. Probably best to change all hoses and belts. Flush the cooling system, and there is a chance the rad and/or heater core may be partially plugged meaning more parts. Hopefully you have turned the engine by hand (not the starter) to make sure it’s not locked. While you have the plugs out it would be a good idea to put a bit of oil in each cylinder and roll the engine over to prime the oil system and wet the cylinder walls. Keep wrenching!

Drop the brackets for the fuel tank. The tank is place up through the bottom versus the top. The tank is removable from the top but not replaced through the top unfortunately.

Junkyard Mook and Kevin, aka "Junkyard Digs" just resurrected her 89 F150, went through the same thing with tanks, fuel senders, tank switching valve, then the new lift pumps. Great trucks, lot's of parts when they die, especially fuel injection.

Carry a spare fuel pump relay. I had that issue with my '92 F150 with the 5.0L. Had the trans and transfer case and rear end rebuilt and at about 80K. Put in a B&M shift improvement kit. Worked fantastic for 100k when I sold it to a friend. He had it for a few years. Take care of that shoulder. It will come back to haunt you if you don't.

You are saving yourself a whole lot of headaches by replacing the whole gas tank! Old gas and EFI doesn't play well together. When you get it running I would add some fuel system cleaner to the gas tank to help clean out the lines and the injectors. Remove and install the tank from the bottom! You may need to drop the exhaust to do it. Looks like it's got some flowmaster or flowmaster knock off mufflers on it. That is one solid truck!!

it's rare to see the dash pad not ripped or torn, also you may have the stamped FORD behind the aluminum on the tailgate. If your vacuum cannister looks to be developing rust holes, switch it out with a plastic one.

A little advice. When buying parts and you are doing it ahead of time I always shop the typical local parts stores and compare them to online store prices esp. rockauto and ebay. Depending on the part you could save some pretty good money. You just may have to wait a week or two for shopping. Keep up the good work my friend.

Bill Elliot is the man for sure. I had the same plate on my 93 F150. But it was white and 2 wheel drive. 228000 miles on when I sold it.

Take the bolts at the front of those straps loose,take the back bolts out then the straps will hang down.Then you can slip the tank up in place sit a jack under just to hold it till bolts are back in place.You had to have prayed the old one out ,cause the don't come out the top.I used to rebuild wrecked trucks were I used to work so yea I have built thousands of Ford trucks,it's funny cause I'm a die hard Chevy man.
@steves46393 жыл бұрын
i took out both tanks of my '80 f350 from below...new tanks, sending units, filler necks, straps and pads. took some wrangling, but they finally seated. you'll need to change out those straps...looking pretty rusted. also, get a couple fuel filters cause the same nasty fuel that was in the tank is also in the lines...you'll want to run fuel through them for a bit and then change out the filter. the brother is hilarious...can NOT be bothered with no youtube foolishness lol
@DanEBoyd3 жыл бұрын
I'll bet dollars to donuts that it's the original 5.0 in there. Can't believe how those paint cans were stuck to that bedliner!! Dang, $6500 was a pretty penny for a 144,000 mile truck, although that is a pretty loaded short bed. I was kinda surprised you pulled the tank up out of the frame. It looks like you could remove the tailpipes off of the mufflers with some patience and persistence. I replaced the midship tank in my '77 F150, from underneath. I've never had the bed off, but I did do a cab swap.

That is a slick truck and a 4x4 to boot. Great truck! Get her going.
@prevost86863 жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion. Run Rotella 10W30 or 5W40 in the old girl. They still contain enough ZDDP to protect the flat tappet lifters in it. I’m fairly certain that the 5.0L used in Mustang applications had roller cams but truck 5.0L used flat tappet cams. It’s been a long time since I worked for Ford but I think I am correct.

That engine at least looks exactly right for the year. Whether or not it was replaced I can't say. By the way you might check out Deboss Garage and Junkyard Digs channels - on the most recent Junkyard Digs vid he talks about a contest they are putting together for people recording revival projects. Giving away prizes. As long as you are recording for this channel maybe it would be fun to join that contest too. And Kevin - the JYD channel owner - may even have ideas and suggestions if you hit any snags on the truck. Another Ford truck owner I've been watching is Thecraig909.

Goes in from under truck. There's no need to remove bed. You need to get brake parts, calipers , rear wheel cylinders and hoses 2 front's 1 rear and a master cylinder. I guarantee that it's a Ford that set for a spell

I like it. I wouldn’t repaint it, no need to waste money on making it look like all the others. You can’t buy a cool looking patina. On the rust spots and maybe some where the paint is gone, use a 0000 steel wool or a really fine sand paper and maybe buff it, then wax or clear coat it. Dropping a tank is usually more difficult when full of fuel, but with the new tank being empty, if you need to put it in from beneath, no worries. Check the straps for holes and rust, clean them up and maybe throw some good paint on them to keep them from rusting further if they are ok. You might need to swap out some bolts if they are too far gone. Get some grade 8s to replace them if you have to. I doubt I’d do stainless unless they are equally priced.

Hey, On my 1988 F150 when I replaced the gas tank, which is the same as the you and your brother are installing. I installed it from the bottom, I had unhooked the exhaust from the back hangers, spraying some WD40 on the rubber hanger help me get it lose. Once the exhaust was lowered I was able to slide it in place.

...Now would be the time to pressure wash all the frame...There is a chemical which turns the remnant of red rust (after pressure washing) into black iron oxide sealing and stopping any future rust.... the chemical can either be sprayed on or brushed on...and if you want to, can be be painted without any other primer or prep work.
