Parker had a tonsillectomy the same day as his sister. His sister took fewer opioids and had more pain; Parker took less and died. He died because he wasn't monitored and he suffer respiratory depression that wasn't caught. This film talks about how Parker's death led his Doctor, Dr. Catten, to make changes in the way he monitored patients and saved other patient's lives because Dr. Catten learned from Parker's death. A law in Utah called Parker's Law was passed to require home monitoring for patients who are on opioids. This film will open up our Safety Policy & Incentive Panel where prominent leaders who focus on healthcare policies and incentive programs that are driven by data.

Parker and I worked together and I was in shock that this young healthy man had just died. Several years previous, I had similar surgery and medication. I always took less than I was supposed to because I didn't like the way it made me feel. My throat always hurt some during healing, but I'm here to talk about it. Be aware, ask questions. It's okay to ask questions, it's your body.

Could send home patients and families with narcan as well (or recommend they pick some up) and that way they can start to reverse opioid related respiratory depression before EMS arrives

I am the grandfather of CiCi Corbin. She was only three years old when she died from the same complications one year prior to Parker’s death. Some very good things came from the death of Parker, and I am grateful. My concern, is that the root cause (the opioid) is not adequately addressed. It seems this drug should be taken out of the equation. Also, I’m not sure why monitoring was not required after the death of my granddaughter. To my knowledge no corrective actions were taken for an entire year after her passing. At least I am not aware of any corrective actions. Other pain management options should be considered. It also seems inappropriate that opioids were prescribed to both CiCi, and to Parker even though both had respiratory issues while sleeping (I could be wrong about Parker’s respiratory condition). Please correct me if I’m wrong. Thank you ALL who have worked so hard to make positive changes so others will benefit from what has been learned.

Yes, Preston, I wish something had been done after CiCi passed away. I was heartbroken to hear about her death. It was because of CiCi that I realized that this was not a "storm of events" or a random, unexplainable death in my son Parker. I wondered how a 3-year-old and a 21-year-old could die the same way and there not be a common link causing their deaths. We have learned a lot from the many respiratory depression deaths in our area. Because people were willing to share the information about their loved ones, even though it is very hard, we are getting closer to finding a solution.

I lay blame on the surgeon who sent him home on an opioid for a tonsillectomy. I had my tonsils removed when I was 12 and did not need an opioid. Good grief place the blame where it needs to be.

It is much harder on adults than children. There is often more pain involved. So at least some might be necessary

It’s much harder for adults. I got it done at 25 didn’t eat or drink for a week. My mom threatened to take me to the hospital if I didn’t at least drink water.

Tragic I'm so sorry. But the correct tool is capnography, this is immediate versus POX
